2012-2013 FLHTCUSE vibration/turbulence/instability
« on: January 25, 2013, 06:02:19 PM »

My new 2013 CVO ultra seems to have alot of vibration/instability compared to my 2009 CVO ultra.  It is really bad on windy days or behind semi's.  Have you experienced the same thing and when?  Has anyone arrived at a solution?

Like you brother, I have been riding a long time and have logged some serious miles. Every bike I have had gets turbulance behind Semi's. I NEVER like to ride anywhere near them anyway and get way out in front of them right away because they block my vision of unseen objects lying on the highway so I am never in that position to begin with. As far as windy days, Well windy days push us all around on two wheels. I think windshields cure alot of the wind buffeting on the batwings. I found the stock ugly 12" is best but I refuse to use this one and will sacrifice a little more wind in my face. No helmet law in Florida so I dont have that weight on my head for the wind to move around even more. Personal preference I guess, just don't like them but trying to get used to wearing one now that I'm married and wife loves to ride.

I've had different year bikes like you had. I had an 08 Ultra that I had to put that progressive brace on because it always felt loose in the rear.YOu see my green bike in my pic here was a 2010 and it rode great. My CVo Ultra is the most comfortable , Stable bike I have ever been on and it got even easir to Handle when I changed the Handle Bars to Wild one mini Ape 578's.

Size , Weight and conditions are definately a factor for every one.

i ended up using a klock werks windshield and had gotten rid of the handle bar mirrors and went with fairing mirrors and made a big difference try the w/shield 8.5 inch and ride without the mirrors and see if it makes a diff.also have your fall away on your ft end checked to see if that is set properly

saw that one, but it got to a point where there were not the solutions I was looking for.  I also saw the post where the 2012 CVO ultra wound up totaled and the person riding it was lucky to still be around.  there is some belief it is the wheels, mirrors, windshield (I am already using a Klokwerks 8.5) so that eliminates one solution.  For me the only time it is bad is when I am a single rider and there is wind, whether from nature, or other traffic.  I am interested in finding out the extent of the problem.  How many people have had the issue, particularly when it was not expected?

There is a thread or posts on here with a fellow with a similiar problem and the dealer changed either just the front wheel (or both wheels) to an older design (different spoke pattern) and he swore his problem was solved.  Good luck and hope you get the bike where you want it to be.

Like I posted in the other thread, I did an experiment.  With the chisel front wheel that came on the bike, the bike behaves exactly like yours. Put a stock Streetglide wheel on it and all of the issues went away.  Put a different tire on my chisel wheel and reinstalled and all of the instability came back.  Tells me that it is something with the front wheel.  I would bring this to the dealer and ask them to ride it, swap the front wheel, and ride it again...

I'm getting somewhat nervous reading about all these issues about turbulence and front end "squirreliness" as I am getting my new bike next month. I hope everyone is conveying these problems to the MOCO. Hopefully someone there is listening and help to rectify these issues. Keep our fingers crossed.

To be fair, it doesn't feel like I will lose control, it just doesn't feel planted with the chisel front wheel.

Would rider size have anything to do with this issue?  I am 6' and a beer chiseled 220 lbs  :drink:  I have not experienced this issue yet.  I only have 2,000 miles on it so far (darn snow) but I have had it over 100 mph for a brief distance (couple miles) with no issues.  I have the tall windsplitter shield on it still some buffeting on windy days but bike never felt unstable.

I am 6', 220 as well and haven't liked the way the bike felt since day 1.  Talked to the dealer today.  Was told that they have no mechanism to take care of a design flaw, only defects, and to call HD Customer Service at 800-258-2464...

that's a most interesting observation.

Anyway, don't forget to check both engine mounts.

No surprise to anyone who has dealt with issues with the MoCo, I was told by them that there is nothing wrong with the wheels and that they will not be doing anything to correct the issue.  I think that everyone with the issue should call them and open a case if for no other reason than to have it on record that you aren't happy.  Guess I will be buying wheels on my own...

I've had different year bikes like you had. I had an 08 Ultra that I had to put that progressive brace on because it always felt loose in the rear.

Do the '08 CVO's have the same suspension? I thought the IDS was supposed to help with the rear stability and handling? Can you give me some more info on the Progressive brace and did it correct the problem?
