Camshaft Needle Bearings
« on: January 26, 2013, 10:41:43 AM »

I have a question I hope someone can help.
I have noticed when people change out cams they pull and replace the camshaft needle bearings.  My new 110 has 700 miles (its been rainingthe last three days!)  And I have new cams I want to throw in and dont see a reason to replace the needle bearings.
Is there a problem I am unaware of?
Thanks in advance!

What model and year bike are you talking about (suggestion: put that info in your profile and we won't have to ask).  If you have a 2013 CVO110, you already have the higher capacity inner cam bearings from the factory.  Earlier model year 110's have the lower capacity bearings that should be replaced.

Thanks Jerry!
Yes its a 2013 FLTRXSE2.  One week old today.
I will post pics and set up a sig eventually.   This server won't take my photos straight up, too big, so I have to send them to my home computer and resize them then post!
But I promise it will be done!

Like Jerry said since you have 2013 your good to go on came bearings. But while your in there I would suggest replacing the factory C lifters with a known good aftermarket lifter such as Woods, S&S, or Gaterman 1023's and you should have many miles of worry free riding.

I dont know about previous year CVO's but this  one has the se tappets already stock.  I put those in my 01 FXDWG last year and am satisfied.  The dyna has the Dave Mackie Megasphere package with .590 lift cams S&S roller rockers and the lifters are doing their job just fine!  The compression is lower on the SERG and lift on the cams will be .575 (Mackie grind as well, if that tells you how thrilled I have been with his work! ) so I will leave the tappets alone.  I will take the rocker covers off when I put the cams in and throw roller rockers in the SERG though.

Harley didn't mention it in their new model literature, but sure enough the 2013 CVO110's have part number 18572-13 lifters, which are supposed to be the new SE higher capacity roller lifters.  I guess time will tell if they really are any better.

Too bad the Moco likes to use the riding public as beta-testers.

Pretty disingenious of their new model literature to not mention this change....  I always wonder what they know that we don't know...   :(

I tend to wonder what they really know, period.  I'm guessing that after many years of roller failures taking out entire engines they probably got enough pressure from the ESP folks that they bit the bullet and upgraded the lifters.  Of course they haven't announced anything to all those folks who are still riding around on a potential grenade with the earlier 110's.  Big surprise, right?  This is the same bunch of wonderful folks who kept their mouths shut with the old spring loaded cam chain tensioners that also had a tendency to wipe out entire engines.  Since it will take many millions of miles to gather enough data to prove this "fix" effective, I assume like Hillside Scott that this is another customer beta test situation.

Well ain't that the chits!  After catastrophic failures of both the cam bearing and the tappets in my '07 cuse2 motor I wonder if the new motor I got from the reman facility last month has these two new parts.  Don't know how I would know or be able to tell.

And I know my '12 cuse7 does not have either.  So maybe I should upgrade to them at about 25-30k on that motor. :nixweiss:  Well that is assuming the beta testing on them pans out.   :confused5:

I'm not sure how you feel about such things, but I personally would prefer to spend my money with a company that didn't screw me over on a regular basis.  In other words, you can buy better inner cam bearings and lifters from other companies, so I don't see a need to reward H-D by purchasing their supposedly upgraded parts.  To each his own however.
