Do you cover your bike in the winter?
« on: January 29, 2013, 11:52:35 PM »

Today had a warm day for Chicago, also rainy. Norm would be 30, but it was a quick warmup.  However I took the cover of the bike (CVO cover I received with the bike) and the bike was covered in condensation, almost soaked.  Not sure what is worse, the cover holding in moisture or leaving it off.

Thoughts from those in cold weather towns greatly appreciated.

sealed up in the northern climes is always a bad thing. here in minnesota a month in a tight box and things are really really wet.

a roof to keep the rain off - good

walls to keep the wind down - good

but if its not heated and cooled - there needs to be lots of ventilation or rust and rot will come

Try getting/placing a dehumidifier where you store your bike.

I live over in Germany and decide to get one of the Harley Bubbles.  Since it is only sold in 110V, I had to modify to work with 220V.  I think this would be the ticket for you, if you have the space.  I have checked it numerous times of the day and I have no moisture at all.

SmokeyJoe, I like the Skunk-in-a-Bag! :2vrolijk_21:

Blackhawk, I live in western Wisconsin and we have some swings like you do. I use the breathable cover on both bikes and never had had those problems. I have seen a few garages up here that have condensation issues but those have an extra heat source that cause the problem when the concrete quickly warms up.  Do you have any heat vents or dryer ducts that lead into your storage area?

Thanx all, I was pretty excited about it too.  My little girl (3yo) think its stuck in there and is very concerned that I cant get it out.

Lots of time something as simple as a light under the cover does wonders.

While I don't currently (K'ville is almost too far North... :2vrolijk_21: ) live in a climate that dictates covering/storing for the Winter, I have attempted to utilize the cover in the past while the bike was in the garage (mostly during the "crap on the road to cut down on ice" days).  Don't like it.  While our garage is not heated/cooled it is insulated so that helps some but there is still some moisture.  Just don't like the covers as (to me...my opinion and two cents) they always seem to scratch/rub/damage something no matter how careful I am with the install/removal.

Like the Harley Bubble much better for an option if I ever had to cover a bike in the garage.  Contains the bike and keeps air flowing....

I took the cover off of my Breakout 2 days ago and it was rainy/cold/foggy and there was no condensation on mine at all.  I have the soft breathable cover from Harley....the $80 one.  It is a 3rd car garage that rarely opens in the winter though....

I've heard that setting the battery tender on a floorboard will also generate enough heat to keep things dry under there.

I would have thought the cotton cover that comes with your CVO would breath.  I bought a lightweight, loose fitting, dust cover that's like a thin sheet to cover my bike.  I've never had a condensation problem.  Came from Nelson Rigg and was about $25.

I just use the CVO cover that came with mine, it sits on the floor and I have a frost air blower under the bike, works a treat :)
