She's still a float
« on: January 31, 2013, 08:00:50 PM »

Found this pic of the ship I did my marine engineering on "she's a beauty" in the 80's.

She's a singel screw powered by two 8 Cly. apposed piston (2 pistons in each Cly) 2 stroke Fairbank diesel engines with vertical drive and variable pitch prop. She has done 20 knots at 720rpm with both engines on line at a prop pitch of 8 degrees

There are 4 Dorman 6 Cly. 4 stroke 175kw DC. diesel generators 1 gen. is always on for the ships power.

She has an active rudder (witch is an 400A~ DC. motor and prop built in to the rudder) takes 3 Gen's on line to power it, she can turn with in her own length.

Saw the pic and memories came flooding back. Thought I'd share

Awesome photo and glad she's still running.

Saddens me to see that all of the conventional powered carriers I've sailed on have been decom'd. Guess they don't last forever...which makes seeing you ship still afloat all that much the better.

I was on a sub tender in the very early 80's.  Our emergancy diesel generator was a Morris-Fairbanks, a straight 12 cylinder with the horizontally opposed pistons.  It was built commissioned in 41.

That would be a Fairbanks-Morris straight 12 cylinder.  After his service in the Army Air Corp in WWII, my 89 year old father in law worked at Fairbanks-Morris in Beloit, Wisconsin - retiring after 45 years of service...   :2vrolijk_21:

Canadian - eh! Built in Beautiful British Columbia.
Yup...Canadian Built but if not mistaken.....

I do believe she was built in the east New Foundland in the late 50's She spent some yrs there on the Atlantic. Then was sailed around the horn up to B.C. in the mid. or late 60's may have been mid 70's can't really recall.
But when ever it was the yrs I spent on her where some of the best.  Crew of 18

Thy are a cool engine....until on a 3 week routine engine maintenance you have to clean (scrap) out the exhaust ports of the blackest carbin soot "NOT A FUN JOB" your father-inlaw would know of this required maintenance of
fairbanks. He should know of the L.O.P. and F.O.P. that gos along with the motors, I could go on and on, but ya good engines.
