Hydraulic Clutch Failure
« on: February 01, 2013, 07:36:43 AM »

Yesterday I had some troubles with my Hydraulic clutch on my 12 CVO Road Glide.

First I stalled it at the red light just before the dealer.  Thought that was strange.  Restarted and everything seemed fine.  Road to the dealer, looked around had a beer.

Got ready to go home, started the bike, pulled in the hydraulic clutch dropped her in first and the bike lurched forward.

Seems the clutch was not fully disengaging.

So service looks at it for me.  The piston in the master cylinder has been rubbing on the housing.  Worn bad and leaking buy bad, they cant rebuild it and get it to hold.

Any one else have this issue?  22543 miles on the bike.

Will  be down about a week have to get the parts sent in, then have to get the housing powder coated gloss black.

Yes,

HD will make you go through a series of BS until they finally put a rebuild kit on your bike.  I had mine in twice, they re-bled the clutch let it sit and sent me home, after the 2nd time I was stranded I made them keep the bike, ride it once a day and guess what....clutch went flat again.  They put a rebuild kit on and I never had the problem again.  That was on my 2010 CVO Ultra.  No issues with this bike yet, it's been flawless.

Are you referring to the handle bar MC or the slave on the trans side?

First they replaced some valve trans side I forgot what it was called, anyway, they did that and it didn't work.  They ended up rebuilding the master cylinder on the handlebars and replacing the lines.  Somewhere there was a small leak that after sqeezing the clutch and sitting it lost pressure.  The resisted the rebuild until I through a tantrum and MFd them up and down.

You may leave yourself open to more problems by getting the unit powdercoated.  >:(

Yep, you cant powder coat these newer ones.  I have tried and the unit was screwed up.  Harley now makes one from the factory in black.

accidents - even severe ones - are quite frequently caused by those hydraulic clutches not properly bleeded or leaking, just search the site for "hydraulic clutch" and you will be buisy reading for some time ...

The dealer here replaced the master cylinder and all is fine. No BSing around on the dealers part.

Looks like you may need to find a new dealer if that is the only way to get good customer service after spending over 35,000 for a motorcycle!

Any of the issues when the engine is hot?
My 2010 seuc would loose all hydraulic pressure and the lever could be operated with a feather.

Only happened when in heavy traffic when engine got real hot.
After 30 min +/- it would cool down enough and the Clutch would work again.

Cheers

Have you changed your exhaust?  The brake fluid in the clutch line is getting too hot.  Same thing happens when riding brakes downhill.  Overheat and lose braking until things cool.  I recall reading that some may have used some kind of insulation on the clutch line where it is down near the exhaust.

No I still am one of the few that have a stock exhaust.

When the dealer opened up a trouble ticket with the company, the company asked if the exhaust had been modified because they had not heard of it happening on a stock exhaust.

At least the response provided humor.
