Minimum size for a single bike trailer.
« on: February 04, 2013, 01:05:13 PM »

What is the minimum size enclosed trailer I can comfortably use for transporting my bike? I want plenty of room for the bike but I want to try to keep towing weight to a minumum.

Well, a batwing bagger is approximately 8 feet long and about 42" wide, so just call it 4 X 8.  A 6 X 12 would give you room, and if you get a V nose, you'd have a little bonus space for a gear box, tools, cleaning supplies, etc.  For an enclosed trailer, that would be about the least I'd get.  7 X 12 would give you a bit more space to walk around the bike when loading, strapping down, etc.

My wife likes being a BSR. Has no interest in riding her own bike. I tried to teach her in the 80's and she was scared to death. She talked about learning to ride my Heritage when I ordered this bike. When I told her to take a rider course and we would keep it she said she was joking. I don't see that being an issue.

I have a 5x8 v-nose that I bought when I had a Road King, but now that I have a Road Glide, it's a little tighter. The Road King would fit easily, even with the windshield. The road Glide is just a little harder to strap down, but I'm still happy with the size.
I have a Chalet in the mountains, with not a lot of room for parking, so I wanted the smallest trailer that could safely tow my bike in.

Here is a few pics with the new Road Glide in it so you get the picture...

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I'm going to look for a 6X10 v nose. With the 6 foot width, I'll be able to haul my mower and get rid of the open trailer I have now.

I got a Featherlite 6X12 several years ago. Set it up with one chock centered and two chocks staggered for two dressers. I have been renting it out to Harley riders who go south for a week in the winter, or people who need to get somewhere fast and then ride.  Have it almost half paid for. I've found that Harley riders will take care of your stuff.

It's also moved into and out of a hundred dorm rooms and apartments, as well as transported my lawn tractor and mower for service.  I love it.

That's enterprising!! I was just thinking about using it as a permanent spot for my mower to give my bike more room in the garage. I like the idea of offering it to other Harley owners....don't know about college kids.
