New Cams
« on: September 13, 2006, 10:43:47 PM »

Well the it seems the cam chains where ready to be serviced.  Decided to replace the them with S&S 570G's, along with up-graded beehive springs.  My question is does anyone know what the stock compression is of a '01 S.E. Road Glide with 95c.i. 203 cams and heads?  Also they found that the cam plate was grooved and the oil pump was chewed up from some unknown contamination going through it.  They found nothing in the pump or in the motor oil, tech thought maybe it was shavings that didn't get removed when the motor was built..??  Any thoughts
Also looking at upgrading to a horsepowerinc.net throttlebody and injectors.  Was wondering if anyone else had used one of these throttlebodies before.   Thanks

I am considering the same thing. I don't know exactly when to do it though. I ride a 2004 FXSTDSE2 and have almost 12000 miles on the motor. I want to do this because I am weary of the nylon (or whatever) adjusters wearing out. I want to do the S&S stock kit just to get back to all gears. Only thing is I read that Harly went to chains because it was quieter than gears. In any case I am preparing for the deed. I hope to last 50,000 miles before doing this. I have no idea of what the mileage is though. What are your miles? that would help out. I will do this myself. (a winter thing).

There are numerous threads discussing cams for our 103's.  You can use the Search function to find them.  That being said, I had the Freedom Cams installed recently.  They're gear drive and specifically designed for a basically stock 103.  104 HP, 116 Torque, but the bike is a LOT more responsive since the torque curve comes in at a lot lower RPM.

That being said, my tensioners weren't too bad at 24K miles, but JC's came apart at about the same mileage and took out his oil pump.  I've heard of them coming apart at 5-10K, but I've also heard from people who have had 30K and theirs were okay.  It's a crap shoot, one that I wasn't willing to go for.  I wouldn't wait until 50K.

Those are wise words spoken there. Yes, gear driven cams can be a little noisier, but what's a little noise compared to peace of mind?

First off he has a 95 inch motor that is 10.0 to 1. A 103 bolt in cam will not work as it will raise the static cranking pressures toooooo high. Our 103's come from the factory with a 8.7 to 1 compression ratio. That is why these cams are specific for our CVO motors. Soooooo his choice of the S&S 570 grind is a very good choice for a 95 inch motor in a bagger. Zippers red shift 557 is also a very good choice.

As far as gear drives go. There should be no real increase in noise from the installation of the gear drive. If there is then there is a problem with the crank assembly being out of square. The one in my EAGLE at the time of tear down was .008 and the factory says no more than .002. Even at .006 more than factory run out you will start to get some noise. As father time takes its toll on the motor it will get worse. So check the run out on the crank at time of installation.

The 01 SE 95 inch motor has a 3 peice crank assembly that is pressed. It works OK as long as you are not pulling hole shots on a regular basis or you are into it at WOT most of the time. If this is the case you should have the assembly trued and welded.

GODEATER the 570's are a great choice. Have your heads freshened up. Change the cam plate and install the Zippers shim along with a fueling oil pump. Your motor will be good for a long time if you take care of it.

Personally I like the Andrews 55g with the 9.5 - 10.0 to 1 compression.

;D Well they are in and it still needs to be dyno'd and have the map done on the PCIII, but wow what a differnce.  Left bike night last night and at the first stop light took off and my buddy said the front wheel was pop'n up in the first two gears.  Really didn't even leave hard.  I can't believe how much harder it pulls.
