Road defects in the New England Area
« on: September 14, 2006, 12:23:45 AM »

Although this topic is subject to change with the weather, road repairs, and other factors. I feel due to the fact that my wife and I nearly both departed from my bike during a recent trip to NH. on RT 93 N that I would be remiss in not reporting to my fellow brothers of the expansion joints on the last overpass roughly 5 miles due south on 93N over RT 113. In the high speed lane try to keep your speed to 70-75 which should be just another bump at that speed, any faster than that you should be ready for flight!! I should have started this topic in the spring, as I've come across many spots, in many roads, that I wish I knew where coming.

I still remember (like a hallucinogenic nightmare) the first time I ever got on one of those things.  Had no idea it was up there.  Would never have imagined anyone would stick something so warped right in the middle of a major highway.  And, just like you said, got on and went round and round and round.  Eventually it was either throw up or get out of traffic.  When you know they're coming it's easier.  But when one of those round and round bastards just sneak up on you unexpectedly it just messes with you man!

To paraphrase Crocodile Dundee - those aren't roundabouts - THIS is a ROUNDABOUT

Thanks for the heads up,
There are two or three bridge crossings near the Gardner area on the east bound side of route 2 that are pretty nasty too.

My two favorite "roundabouts" are the one on Rt.2 in Concord and the one at Rt.91/Rt.2 in Greenfield. Of course the ones in Ireland/England are even more special because you enter on the left sitting on the right side of the car. The first few are the most fun as you expect to be hit head on at any moment. [smiley=nervous.gif]

A Song by YES...

The expansion joints that always freak me out on the Deuce are the ones on the Newport Pell Bridge.  I swear that the front tire could fit in those grooves forcing to go flying over the handle bars!  They have to be 3" wide and a couple of feet long...

Isn't it amazing how the internet allows us to find this minutiae???

10 years ago I would have had to find this in some RI state government office requiring at least 4 hours...here I did it in 5 minutes...
