Spring is almost here
« on: February 12, 2013, 06:21:55 AM »

Ok, just about valentines day, I am in northern Illinois, some what close to Wisconsin, and am so ready to pick up my Deuce from winter storage at Woodstock Harley. I had them replace both tires this winter and adjust the steering head bearings due to some instability in the bike towards the end of last season.

As a rule, I ride when the weather is clear and above 40 degrees, my question for the day is What is your criteria before taking out your Screaming Deuce?

Just a few miles north of you in Wisconsin and I have a habit of waiting for the first rain to get rid of some of the liquid salt that they use up here. Messy stuff. Usually early April. Less than 60 days!

Same as E-Skunk. Wait for a few showers to clear most of the salt and some of the loose sand from the roads. Temps not so important as I have heated gear.

Genrally 40 degrees, no black ice or snow visible on my street. Preferably after a good rain to wash some of the sand and salt off.

:( Just got Record 31.9" Snowfall, so it will be awhile this year.

I did managae a 115 mile ride in January, before Winter really settled in

To get the cobwebs off, 1st five or six sunny days over 50. Then I start to get picky.....70 with or without sun and little wind. Since I retired this year, I'm gonna pile some miles on this spring, summer, fall. Thats all  :huepfenjump3:

I usually try to get out at least one day a month every year. Cold isn't as much of a factor as clear roads. I just usually wait for a sunny day, and no ice/snow on the road. The salt and sand don't bother me that much either.

:soapbox: SALT is usually what holds me up.  Not good for the chrome and it eats away at the finish if you don't wash it off real good.  In the end, it's still difficult to get it all off especially in those hard to reach places.  I usually wait unitl after a real good rain fall where the road salt is washed away.  Temperature, anything above 50 is OK, but the roads got to be clean!  4-5 more weeks!

Ideally, I look for 55 and sunny but I have been known go riding with temps in the high 30's if the sun is shining. The forecast for tomorrow is 57 and sunny so I'll be riding for sure.

As long as there ain't no snow and the salt crap has gone/washed away, everyday is a good day to ride.  Heading into work last week with the thermometer reading 18 at the house.  A bit brisk but beats cagin'.

Y'all folks up North just need to migrate South....come on down boys, the water is fine..... :2vrolijk_21:

Yeah     They really lay the salt down in Michigan  :-\   Around the city there is so much overpour  it becomes speed bumps of salt (tax dollars at work)    LAZY!
