Max size micro SD card for 660
« on: February 12, 2013, 09:57:34 AM »

What's the max recommend size micro SD card for the Zumo/Road Tech 665?  Do the larger cards cause any problems?

I loaded a couple hundred songs on without an SD card.  Could that be part of my problem with the Zumo locking up while playing an MP3 tune?

I have a 16GB card, a lot of music, and pictures to change screen saver.  I don't think theirs a limit.  If i remember correctly, 8GB will hold about 1,200 songs in AAC format, about 1,500 in MP3 format?

Per Garmin, the largest card they recommend is 8 GB, but a larger card won't hurt anything, it just may not work.  The following cut and pasted from the official Garmin website:

-------------------------------
02/08/2013

As long as the automotive device has the latest version of software, the device can use the following maximum card size from the table below. Please use the WebUpdater program at the following link to download the latest device software version: http://www.garmin.com/webupdater

Unit Series / Maximum Size of SD Card

nuvi series / 8GB 1

LIVE series / 8GB 1

zumo 400 & 500 series / 4GB

zumo 220, 350, 600, & 605 series / 8GB 1

dezl series / 8GB 1

StreetPilot c500 series / 4GB

StreetPilot c300 series2 / 2GB

StreetPilot i-Series2 / 2GB

StreetPilot 7200 / 7500 / 2GB

GVN 52 and 53 / 8GB 1

KNA-G510 / 8GB 1

Depending on the model of the device, it may use either a full size SD card or a microSD card, please refer to its documentation for more information. When using a card with a larger capacity and when the files on the card are large in number and/or size, the device's ability to draw mapping may be slowed.

For OEM dealer devices, please refer to the series above that fits the device.

1 Using an SD card size larger than 8GB is not supported for these devices. However, using one will not harm the device but it may or may not work. Also, Garmin supports all speed ratings (including unmarked cards).

in Germany Garmin used to defend itself against SD card reading complaints referring to their (German) website that used to claim 4 GB as maximum size for SD cards (660).

Nevertheless many use 16 and 32 GB cards without mayor problems. I got a - fairly empty - 32 GB the 660 sometimes refuses to read on first try. I tried a 4 GB and as there was no significant difference in failure rate I changed back to the 32 GB. Have to restart every 3rd or 4th time, but when the zumo decides to read the card there are no further problems during use.

All the post on this topic are talking about holding music and photos. I have the IPOD that came with the 11' SERGU, so I do not have the same need.  I am disappointed (in general with a $700 Garmin!) that when I tried to load a saved route onto the SD card so that I could move it to my buddies Garmin 550, the file can not be transferred to the SD card!

Download the route to Map Source then download it to your buddies 550.

I just did this the other day on my z660.  In the "edit" screen of the route, I used the "export" option.  Wrote it to my card just fine.  That was after I applied the most recent update.

I have only used this twice, so I can't say it's seemless with every firmware version or attempt.  All I can say is that it has worked for me on both occasions with no fanfare.
