Have you ever had a Compression Check or Oil Analysis?
« on: February 20, 2013, 12:29:45 PM »

Have you ever had a Compression Check or Oil Analysis done?

I realize that a lot of Forum Members frequently buy New CVOs or do Performance Upgrades.

Some of us enjoy keeping and maintaing their Older CVOs.

After 40 odd years of Sailing on US Merchant Ships, many on Very Large Motor Ships, the thought came to me.
Would not it be beneficial to owners of older CVOs, with higher Mileage, to check their Compression and Do a Lube Oil Analysis.
The Lube Oil Analysis is pretty low cost, around $25 - $30.

IMHO, both tests would offer you information that could help ascertain when you need to reRing, check bearings etc etc..........

Once determine, one could decide to do Performance Upgrades, which would also address the needed maintenance, such as new HiPo Pistons and Rings, new Cam and Bearings etc etc...........

Also thinking maybe not a bad idea to pull off the crankcase cover and muck/clean it out. Then reInstall thr cleaned oilpan with new gasket

I send the oil out from my drag Buell to Blackstone. I've been surprised at what they find in it.

Most common oil samples are only tested for coolant or fuel (diesel) in the oil.  :2vrolijk_21:

Try a leak down test rather than a simple compression test.  Much more informative.

As part of the spring maintenance every year Dennis.  Do a leak down rather than a compression test though.

Send oils out every 25k miles on the pickup.  That's about once a year.  Don't on the bikes though unless it's part of some ongoing diagnostic.   I don't leave them alone enough to not have at least a clue.

For what it costs, I figure it worth it for me. I am not having issues, it runs great. Just more of my ongoing diagnostics to determine where everything stands.
I will do the leak test vs Compression Test
I use Amsoil for all three holes. Amsoil offers Lube Oil Analysis, so I will probably give them a shot.

I am used to Reports that list all metal content levels found, amongst other things.

The Large Motorships I sailed on held 5,000 Gallons in the Main Sump. We had Oil Purifies, even for the Fuel.
So the Detailed Reports also showed how well the purifiers were working. It was not normal/economical to be changing 5,000 gallons of Lube Oil

I have done a number of Oil Analysis over the years
If I find an oil I want to try, I will send it in. Fresh out of the bottle unused. (  :cherry: Virgin oil analysis)
Then send a used sample in to compare. (see how the oil is holding up)

Just learned something.  Didn't know Amsoil offered the service gratis.  If I knew it was free I'd do it more regularly too.  The paid tests with the full report are surprisingly cheap.  But you can't beat free.

Am also surprisingly untroubled by the idea of trusting Amsoil to be a fair reporter on a product they sell.  The general regard given to their other public oil reports has always suggested they aren't full of chit.

Twolanerider, to my knowledge the test is not free. Amsoil kit retails for $22.45 non postage paid or $32.20 Postage paid kit. Amsoil uses Oil Analyrers Inc.

Correct
I checked with Amsoil and I will need to Kits, one for Crankcase and one for Tranny.
I only plan to test once per year, so the $60 doesn't bother me.....as long as they provide the same detailed reports I received on the ships I sailed on.
I may vary my Lube changes (Miles) to see if that makes noticable differences.

Have done that before, especially when Shipping Company changed Lube Oil Suppliers.
You are correct, a great way to test the testers.
