Progressive Tour Link (Frame Stabilizer) on a 2012 Frame
« on: February 23, 2013, 07:37:45 PM »

I have a 2012 Ultra Classic Limited and bought a Progressive Tour Link because I'm getting high speed wobble around 90-95 in long sweeping freeway turns. My 2002 Roadking had the same issue and the Tour Link really made a big difference in handling.

Has anyone put one on a 2012 Ultra FLHTK w/Stock exhaust? I bought it (progressive part# 30-2001) and their chart says it fits. Physically I can't see how it would.

The part that mounts on the side of the frame under the running board is now built into the frame and can't be removed. Their part is supposed to replace that. I can't stack it on top, due to the clearance between the exhaust and the frame. Also the stock cross-over pipe gets in the way of the bracket that bolts to the back of the oil pan? Just can't see this working and haven't called Progressive yet. Is there one out there that would fit me application? Had a True-Trak on the Roadking first and it keep bottoming out on speed bumps so I changed it out to the Tour Link a few years back.

To answer those questions of slowing down, ain't going to happen  :)

I'm not an expert, but everything I have been told makes me believe that you have a minor problem that only rears its ugly head under specific conditions.  2009 & up tourers have a different backbone that is not supposed to be affected with the rear steer problems. Wish I could help more, but I don't think a stabilizer will aleve you problem.

The first time I rode my brothers dresser it scared me. My FXR4 CVO is stable even at 115 MPH! The dressers have reverse trees that help stability at lower speeds. Place a Jack under the front end and lift the bikes front wheel off the ground. The forks should self center due to the reverse tripple trees. Most other bikes don't have reverse trees. These front ends may flop to one side or the other when the front is jacked
Off the ground.

I'm no epert either, but I thought the new frame design on the 09 and up all but eliminated the rear steer or wobble problem.  My 08 didn't really start doing until I had about 15000 miles on her.  Put the stabilizer on it and fixed the issue.  I have no idea whether the Progressive fits the 2012.

i run a hd sidecar - i can tell that at times the rear end gets pushed a bit to the right - i worry that a brace attached to the trans might break something so i just put up with it.

id sure like a solution that pushed on the swing arm instead of the trans.

What do the assembly instructions say?  I tried to look the instructions up on their website but all that comes up is the version for the '08 and earlier models.

The stock right side swingarm bracket that got replaced by a PM bracket for those older models is now welded to the '09 and later frames.  Only the left side is removeable on the late models.  Looking at the picture of the new style bracket from PM, you will have to mount the new bracket to the welded on bracket.  Yes, this might result in a clearance issue with the pipes, that's why I asked what the instructions say.  Note that they provide flush fasteners for the bracket rather than standard hex head bolts.  Make sure you use them and not standard style bolts.  You might have to shim the exhaust system out with washers at the trans to exhaust mount, that was a common thing even on the older style Tour Link.

Before you install a bandaid device to cover up a handling problem on the late model bikes I'd suggest some actual diagnostic work to find the real problem.  The '09 and later chassis doesn't normally have the rear steer and high speed wobble that was common on the earlier bikes.  If yours does, there is probably a problem with the motor mounts or swingarm bushings or tires/wheels, etc..  It would be a better idea to try to find and fix the real root cause of the problem IMHO.

Im not sure anything will help under those driving conditions. 90-95mph on twisting roads. An Ultra may not be the bike of choice here. This is a 900 plus pound Bike. Then your weight plus other factors like full fuel tank, and then you have a bike made to do the opposite of this. Harley has never been known for their Twisty suspension to begin with.I believe this is exactly what causes the wobble in the batwing fairing, increased speed, cornering and wind lift.
I had an 08 Ultra and the Progressive touring link certainly helped keeping the rear end of the bike under me at all speeds under 80. I have raced bikes in the past as well and the only bikes your gonna get to handle at those speeds in twisty's are Ducati's , Aprilla's, and the rest of the Japanese line and maybe throw a BMW in there as well.
I agree with the rest of the guys, I dont think that Progressive link if one is made for the newer style frame will help you at all. Maybe their Front Cartride Fork system and a set of 944 rear shocks to set you a little lower for more aggressive corner handling.

For the OP, I think I have experienced the same feeling and its more of a "flexing" and not really a wobble. If conditions are right (3-4am light traffic) I take some of those SoCal freeway sweepers at a high speed and it can give that feeling between 95-115.  It also seems to me that I need hit an imperfection or slight bump in the road to get that "flexing" feeling.  Once I come out of the turn, alls fine.  I agree with everyone else, I'm thinking it could be the shocks, low profile tires, combination of things, or sweepers not ment to be taken that fast!

I also have a 01 FXDWG with tru track, and do not have that problem in any turns.
