GPS navi & Breakout
« on: February 27, 2013, 04:03:14 PM »

Hi there

Waiting the last few days for the delivery of my Breakout. :)

Currently I'm wondering, if there's a nice looking solution to mount any GPS navigation device. It MUST nicely integrate into the beautiful look of the bike.

Has anybody some pictures of mount systems and the handle bar?

PS: I'm especially interested into cable routing and also in the look of the H-D Navi and/or iPhone with weatherproof cases on the Breakout.

Cheers!

Hey Chrome,

I have a RAM mount on both my CVO and V-Rod, and I use a Garmin Zumo 450 that I move between them. The best motorcycle GPS I have ever used, and I tried three of them.  Unfortunately, they don't make this GPS gem anymore.   I bought a backup unit off ebay in case this one ever dies !

I like it because the articulation of the RAM mount places the GPS right next to the instrument cluster on both bikes, so it almost looks like it belongs there.  I have seen folks mount them way out on the bars close to the hand controls, but I don't like that.  I like to keep it central to the rest of my instruments, so my eyes are always looking in the same place for all of my road information.  I have been using this setup for about 5 years now across 3 different bikes and I really like it.

I have the power cord run to my ignition on both bikes, so it is only powered when I'm riding.

The real star of the show is that RAM mount.  It's like a little robot arm that you can place anywhere you want it......highly recommended mount.....

You can get the RAM mount from Amazon.  It uses the standard 4 hole mount that pretty much every motorcycle GPS uses nowadays.  I think they call it the TAB standard mount???

Hi Jeff, hi G_Fend

Thanks for your feedbacks, which I really appreciate. I'll have a look on the RAM mount. :-)

Would you please post (or send me) some detail pictures? :-) How did you hide the cables?

Cheers

Hi Chrome,
I am about 5000 miles from home on vacation, but i will get some detailed pix when I get back the end of next week.  The power cable for the GPS runs in to the same slot on the top of the triples that the braided clutch and break lines run through.  From there it runs under the tank to the ignition siwtch(I'm not sure where the ignition switch is, as the guys at my dealer ran the cable for me.)

Hi Jeff

Wow, thank you, that you're responding from your holidays. :-)

I'm looking forward to see your pictures, as soon you can take and post some. Take your time and enjoy your holidays first!
It's currently difficult for me to exactly follow your description, since my Breakout is still somewhere out on the sea on its way to me.  :drink:

Ah, i just noticed you are from Switzerland!  I was there for the first time via a business trip last year to Geneva.  My wife flew over and we stayed an extra couple of weeks in Europe.  We went up to Zermatt.  Wow, what an incredible place.  Just the train ride up from Geneva was unreal.  Unfortunately, it was very cloudy the day we went and we could not see the Matterhorn.  Also, the cog train was not running and the gondolas were not operating up to their highest point(we were there on a weekday during the off season), but wow, what a stunning place..

Regarding hiding the GPS cable.  yes, it will become very apparent what I am describing when you get your bike...

Hi Jeff

Yes, Zermatt is really a great place. After skiing at different places over the world (Europe, Canada), Zermatt is the number one for me personally. Of course, there are many other nice places for skiing and I didn't see all of them. :) Too bad, that you couldn't see the Matterhorn, but I'm sure, you had anyway a good time there. Maybe you have a chance to see it an other time...

I'm making my decision, if I will mount a Garmin, an iPhone (with LifeProof case) or nothing. That's why I'm interested to see some pics. It must well integrate with the nice look of the Breakout, else I will not mount a GPS navi.

Hi folks,

Got a PM requesting pix of my Garmin Zumo setup.  Thought I would post them on this thread in case anyone else is interested:

This pic shows the articulation of the RAM mount-it allows me to set the GPS low to the bar.

This one shows the overall "dashboard" of the GPS and instrument cluster from the rider's perspective.  As I mentioned before, I really like the fact that I can place the GPS right next to the OEM cluster, so my eyes only have to scan one place to see everything:

Finally, this pic shows the routing of the power cable into the same slot as the internal wiring, en route to the ignition location in the fuse box.

Hi Jeff

Thank you so much for your efforts into posting some pictures, which I appreciate very much. :2vrolijk_21:

Your mount systems seems to work very well and I'll check the details. :)
