WoW.. I am just glad I got mine at MSRP. Only one dealer out of sixty told me 10% above MSRP when I was looking for my bike.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

My advice ... is to get on the HD website and print out a list of dealers within an "x" hunderd mile radius of your home (however far you are willing to drive to pick up your new bike)...

Oh yeah, and in those days... Stealerships had exclusivity. To qualify to purchase the new Harley from the stealership, you had to live in their "zone". Zip Code authentication was strictly adhered to by mandate of MoCo. That means that you could ONLY purchase new from ONE stealership, no competition betweens stealerships.

If you wandered in off the street to a stealership other than your authorized dealer, they could ONLY sell you used bikes, of which back then inventory was nil.

ah, the old days...

A CVO shopping suggestion.  Use the seasonality of a dealer's business to your advantage.   Here in Phoenix, the weather and the deals get hot about the same time.  In the winter when riding is great the deals are not as good.
If you live where it gets cold, wait til it's cold, miserable, and the dealership looks like a ghost town to make your deal. Then ride on over to Arizona and enjoy your new ride.

[highlight]Clyde,
Oakland dealer still has the Blue SERK3 & YellowSE Springer sitting on the floor @$5K over MSRP along with a 2006 SEUC w/500 miles and  a Orange/Black 2007 SEUC both at $5K over MSRP. Go figure.
[/highlight]

Joe,

The 2006 SEUC with 500 miles on it was Bob Dron's personal bike according to the salesman. He wanted to offer me a great deal on it, but we never discussed price since I really wanted the black/orange '07. I am very surprised that they are asking $5K over list for the used '06. I guess that Bob is trying to pay for the new store - they claim to be the largest dealer in Northern California now that they have moved across the street into their new digs.

Clyde

PS: One thing that I did not mention before was that the Oakland dealer refused to tell me the list price on the black/orange '07. I asked six times during the two hours that I was there and they wouldn't tell me. I remembered $34K from Sturgis, and confirmed $33,345 after I left the dealership. I believe that the Oakland dealer broke California DMV law which says that a dealer MUST let the consumer know both the list price and the dealer markup over list. I have not had time to check this out with the Calif. DMV. Anyone know the law on this?

I paid $500 under MSRP at Augusta HD.  I really expected to get it for less than that since it was the 5th new bike that I bought from them.

That's not a lot off of a 34k bike, but it beats the heck out of MSRP PLUS!

I have purchased 3 Bikes in 3 years from OCALA HD and a TON of parts and accessories as they gave me a 20% discount until about 3 weeks ago when they backed it down to 10. I alos was responsible for 2 others buying a total of 3 bikes (grand total 3 new, 3 only a year old). I went to the General Manager personally to plead my case. I asked him to pull up my record as I purchase almost everything there as I could get 10% off pretty much anywhere. He wouldn't even go look and said he could not do it. I know for a fact that there are others that get 20% still.

Anyway, they sell there SE's at $3,000 over MSRP to me or anyone else. I REALLY love the staff there. On a first name basis with most. It grieves me as I will probably not go back there unless I absolutely need to. If they would give me what any other dealer would for my trade and sell at just a little over MSRP I would do it. But oh well.......... it's there business not mine. I wish em the best and will miss them dearly.

that's a dam shame.

I know this will be hard to believe for most folks on the board, but I got my 07 B/O se Ultra for $1000 under MSRP. I did my dealing directly with the sales mgr. and I explained to him the being a Road Capt of the HOG chapter that his dealership sponsored it sure would be nice to have their plate frame on my new CVO. Or if he didn't want to deal with my I could go to another dealer and have their plate frame on my bike parked in front of his dealer ship every sunday morning before chapter rides. I also identified about 10 chapter riders who got a better deal at another dealer on the island and he was completely oblivious to the fact, needless to say he saw things my way. Happy Road Capt influences chapter members.... :) :) [smiley=drink.gif] [smiley=drink.gif]

Glad that worked out well for you!  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

My experience with purchasing my 06 CUSE was the opposite ... I told the sales manager I was a chapter officer (editor) and I would like to buy my bike at the local dealership and would be willing to pay MSRP or even a little over and he told me he wouldn't do it as he has priced the bike at $5k over MSRP and would get it. I took my business to Mile High HD in Aurora, CO (who treated me with respect and no BS) and got my scoot for $600 over MSRP. Not MSRP but not $5k over either. I've since steered buyers to Mile High HD ... yeah.. he may have sold that one for $5k over but he lost more sales because of his arrogance.

Mike,
Don't hold back buddy, tell us what you really think  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Seriously, every time you cost them a sale you get the best revenge you could ask for. I absolutely love your idea of sending them a letter when you cost them a sale. You should also send copies to the MoCo as well. Keep up the good work Dude  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

In France we have the markup practice.
All CVO are ordered by the customers in July. Normally, it's not possible for the dealer to put an order for his shop.
During the others months of the years, it's not possible to found a new CVO in a shop.
The price is fixed at 35581 euros ready to ride. It's means with the exchange rate : 45259$ US. for any colours. But I remember, the customer had ordered his bike in July and had choose is colours.
Often,(for a CVO) the dealer makes a handing-over of 2000 euros (2500$) for apparels or accessories.
