If I see any rust forming, I just spray WD-40 on a Q-tip and clean it out. If you put the little allen csrew buttons in the holes it should keep the water out.

Grover, thanks for the tip on the WD-40/Q-tip process.  I had some rust in a couple bolts on the brackets for the Brembos.  This worked GREAT and was FAST! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Any truth to the notion that stainless steel is actually not so good to use as replacements because they "flex and stretch" much less than the stock bolts?
I had heard they do not "torque up" as well and if you torque the s/s bolts to MoCo specs, the bolts will be fairly loose and not be sufficient to hold as compared to the stock bolts.

I have heard tales of galling and strength reduction due to assembly problems.  I have not experienced any of it and have used them for about 4 years.  I always use at least blue loctite and red where needed.  Maybe that makes a difference.

Have them on rotors and rear belt pulley and the motor mounts of my other bikes for a few years now.  I would think if any were going to break, it would be those.  Never had any torque issues either.  I always use a torque wrench for the critical stuff.

I plan on a complete set for the CUSE this winter. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I've got Diamond SS fasteners on the softtail and Alloyboltz SS on the SEEG.  Both have performed beautifully and I highly recommend polished stainless over chrome plated fasteners as you don't have to deal w/ the rust.  It's almost impossible to not chip the chrome plating on a fastener when installing it and the solid stainless is much better in this regard.  The hot toppers and HD chrome nut covers are good to cover those large bolts or nuts that are hard to replace w/ stainless.  But, where possible, use the polished SS fastener......it is so much cleaner...kinda like the difference between chroming a part instead of putting a chrome cover over it.  JMHO.  [smiley=drink.gif] har!  spyder

C-Deuce,

The real issue is thread galling which will produce high torque indications prior to achieving the proper elongation of the bolt.

Damn! you learn something new from this site everyday. I definitely want to go S/S then as I was also a bit concerned that installing them would chip the chrome. Don't think HD has a set of s/s bolts and screws, correct? I got a b-day gift certificate for my local HD and would like to use it for this if they have 'em.

"thread galling".... I think I've seen a couple of posts on this site that would qualify...something about a d00d and a thong?

Hey C-DEUCE04, you're right.....HD does not have the SS fasteners.....so go w/ either the Diamond or Alloyboltz as mentioned above .......  you want the polished SS.  They make a great overall appearance change as you change the existing fasteners....but, be forewarned, once you start, there's no turning back!  They are the ultimate finishing touch to a clean scooter (in my opinion).....and no polishing or upkeep other than normal washing.  The best deal is to buy the pre-packaged 'sets' instead of individual.  Let us hear how it goes.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] spyder

[smiley=ROFLOL.gif] Not to worry about that, they haven't made a torque wrench big enough for that to happen. ;D

[smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]Thanks!! I knew you guys would have lots of good advice. Now I have to look at budget to decide which I can afford  and bartering for help with the project from hubby (usually something to do with no clothes and a pizza) as I've never torqued anything in my life.  ;)

Personally, I wouldn't spend the time putting on plastic!!  Polished stainless is the way to go.  In the meantime, caps in the hex will keep the water out.  I certainly don't have time to pull out the q-tips to keep out the water!!  Time better spent riding.  We don't have months and months of cold weather, so we ride until February or March and pull them back out in May...and that is if it's a bad year!!

BTW, Red, welcome to the site!  Be careful what you say or you'll start a riot!!!

Maybe I should start up a cottage business....   It's really no big deal to polish this stuff up with the right wheel and rouge.  Goes pretty quick too.  Somebody.....  ought to make up a list of all the appropriate bolts and fasteners that would be needed to do a bang up job of dressing the motor, and I could buy a whole set, polish them up, and then we could do a swap out, (you send the new ones, I send out the polished ones that I fix up in my spare time), and we figure out how much my daughters are earning sitting in the shop talking to Dad while they polish up the heads on hardware!   8-)   I could be the next big child labor mogul, and get a good bit of quality time with my kids while they make a buck or two...   anybody interested?
