How many labor hours for a Cam/Head Gasket install?
« on: March 01, 2013, 12:21:08 PM »

How many hours of labor does it take to install a bolt in cam and a Cometic Head Gasket?  I'm sure the MOCO has a flat rate book for this common practice.  I'm sure a lot of you guys have done several and can probably get it done quicker than flat rate.

Takes me 3-4 hours depending on how many times I take a beer break.

Do you change the base gaskets when you lift the heads?
My tech says to do it, others say it's not necessary...

I did mine about 50K ago & never pulled the cylinder for the base gasket. Cometic MLS gaskets are the way to go. You may think about adjustable push rods while you are there.

Should also consider changing out the lifters.  Lots of lifter failure noted in these motors, more typically around 20K miles.  I changed out my lifters for S&S when I did my cam at 5K miles and also added adjustable pushrods.  Reduced the top end noise quite a bit.

I do not, never have, understood why anyone would put in HEAVY adjustable pushrods unless the were a necessity. We spent major dollars in the past for titanum push rods for the race car and seems everyone on here wants to use the adjustable one whether they need them or not. Weight is not a good thing in the valve train.

I have never changed the base gaskets. I'm very careful to not let the jug move. while turning the engine.

For example 1.8, is that means 1 day 8 hours??

1.8hr=1 hr & 8 tenth's of a hour. At my shop if it's over .5hr  I round it off to the next hour. Because it will take me a half hour to figure out what .8 is,  :confused5: LOL
