Rough Idle
« on: September 18, 2006, 07:51:39 AM »

Have an 06 Eagle Ultra.  We have an issue with noise since we use the radios constantly and communicate with other club members.  I have installed the Fullsac true dual conversion kit, stage 1 air kit but am keeping the stock mufflers.  As soon as I put the true duals on, no air kit yet, My idle became very rough.  The air kit didn't seem to make a lot of difference so decided to install the PC III.  Dynojet didn't have the exact map to use but suggested 807-126.  It seemed to quiet down a bit but still idled rough.  Increased the idle numbers but still rough.  Dynojet gave me another map, 807-237 but no help.
I have an appointment to have a custom map done on Friday but was curious if anyone had a suggestion.  It runs good through the gears, but idle bounces all over the place.
I know you'll say change the mufflers, but really don't want to.  My goal was to reduce the heat and let it breath a little better.

Thanks for any help, Framemaker

Hi Framemaker,
I am sure some members here with way more experience will post here soon so please see what they have to offer.
In my limited experience I see that you may have created a problem here with your bike.
From a balance point of view you need to look at your engine as a complete system,
The air/fuel intake alll the way to the exhaust.
If you allow more air and fuel to enter the engine then you have to increase the flow out as well or it gets choked down and the increased intake has nowwhere to go.If you increase exhaust flow and not intake you loose the back pressure and it affects the engine too.
You may be able to find a more free flowing exhaust that is quiet enough for you.If you don't you may have waisted the increase in intake mods and a tuner can not fix the clogged system. Think of it this way, if Dynojet did not have a map for your setup there may be a very good reason for it? (Is it a bad choice?) I would ask the intake makers what they recomend for an exhaust or contact some of the major exhaust companies and discuss it with them before you buy and express your desire for a quiet yet freeer flowing system.
Personally I would have all my intake and exhaust/tuning mods done at once as a complete package that has already been used instead of trying to make a collection of various parts work. I would consider a kit from Freedom Cycle or Zipper's and maybe even S&S.
I don't know how many miles you have on your bike but you may want to check your front motor mount if you are feeling the rough idle alot not just hearing it.There has been some issue with them cracking.

Thanks for the info.  Yes I understand what you are saying, I will probably have to go to a different muffler. The true dual and stage one air kits shouldn't be any different than other products on the market and that's all I'm going to do.
The bike has about 2000 miles on it, but will have the motor mount looked at.
