My experience regarding GPS and Smartphones...
My 2009 Honda Fit and 2013 Ford Escape both have USB input, and both will accept input from any USB device - including thumb drives. Both radios seem to do a better job with my iPhone as far as integration and control of the devices, but other devices work nonetheless.
My Ford has the SYNC system installed (made by Microsoft, by the way), and the Navigation system works well in my experience. At first, I would transfer my Zumo back & forth because of familiarity, but Sync works well enough for most things. It does block most keyboard input while moving, but it does allow you to select from POI lists, recently found items, favorites, etc. You have to be stopped to enter a search item. A bit of a PIA, definitely safer, but I wish it would give me an option. I won't pay $289 for the "LockPick" mentioned by Porthole though. If I need to type that badly, I'll just carry the Zumo with me or use the Garmen app on my iPhone.
