Q. on vin. access
« on: March 09, 2013, 07:25:05 AM »

I was wondering, is it possible to access ones info. of your bike via the Vin no. With out going to the dealer, or is it dealer access only.

I' wondering this because I don't have any dealer history of mine and the dealer is some distance off. Thanks on any feed back

What type of info are you looking for?  The dealer can tell some things like where it was originally from and what, if any recalls were done and who a bike is registered to.  I don't think they can pull up much of the other info unless they worked on it.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't that clear. I don't know what work,.. or if any recalls have been carried out on my bike. Can u only get that info. from the dealer, or can one get it your self through other means. I know you can get the work history that's been done at a dealer using the Vin.
MY question is can ones self access the info. out side of the dealer or is the info only accessible by the dealer :nixweiss:

There is a place on the public Harley website where you can put in your VIN and get info on outstanding recalls as well as service interval schedules, but I think what you're looking for is the actual work order history that dealers can pull up on hd.net.  I'm not aware of a way for a customer to directly access that info however.  I would think that any Harley dealership would pull the data up for you and even print it out unless they are total jackasses. :nixweiss:

Maybe if they are a really good dealer, you could call them and get them to look your VIN up on the computer then print off and fax, email, mail the printout to you? Would not hurt to ask.

A dealer can access information on any given vin; however, in terms of work done on the bike, all that is visible to the dealer are any safety (recall) campaigns, both completed and outstanding.

Thanks guys,  I going to call the dealer tomorrow and see if thy will(what you suggested 1sharp) email the info over. I'm hopping a fast one hasn't been pulled over on me. When I bought the bike nothing was said of any recall work, bin done or needs to be. I been wanting a Electra Glide since my last one in the early 80s, I was so pumped that after so many years I was final  getting my dream bike. The last thing I was thinking about was recalls.

With this site and all you guys and gals have been so helpfull. I would still not have thought on hitting the dealer up on any of the above said quires.

I'll get back to fill yous in on how it pans out.

If you bought this from a dealer you probably won't have any outstanding recalls since dealers are required to make sure that all recalls are up to date before they offer it for sale.

Even if there is a Recall, most any dealer would be happy to do it for you and recalls are at no cost to you.

Rest easy, ride happy and don't worry about! :2vrolijk_21:

Hey guys thanks for all the in put :2vrolijk_21:I'm now one more step up the long ladder on how HD operates.

You all gave me good sound advice, I contacked them by Phone the dealer he said sure thing,..he asked for the VIN, gave it to him and he read of the description of the bike. Yup he said there was a recall  for the 07cvo Ultra and that was completed in 09 for the rear head gasket up grade :). He how ever could not say as to any other works that may have been done by the dealer that first sold the bike as thy have since closed down and thy do not carry that sort of info on the HD data base. But thats OK so long as the recall was done that was my main concern, also there was only the one recall up grade for that yr. he added.

E-Skunk, I've no worries and resting easy, ;D
Thanks all again, Hope at some time I'll be able to put my to bits in to help

Having had an 07 CVO I know that the vast majority (if not all of them) needed to have that head gasket recall done.  That was the first year of the 110 motor.

Glad to see that it was a help Longlast! Peace of mind is a good way to start the ownership of a new bike. Especially one as nice as your CVO!

One last thing would be to ask the dealer if they transferred the bikes registration with the MoCo to your name. That way you will be notified if there are any other future recalls. :2vrolijk_21:

As for the HD ladder, it's a long one so don't bother counting the rungs! :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:
