Head Bolt replacement question
« on: March 09, 2013, 08:21:27 PM »

Hey Guys,

I'm pretty sure I know what all your answers are going to be, but wanted to pose the question any for the experts here.  On my 02 Softail the one headbolt on the rear cylunder is rusty.  What do you all think about removing that one bolt and replacing it?  Do you all think I will end up blowing the head gasket?  The process I thought of in doing this would be to have the replacement bolt ready and lubed properly and replace it soon as the old one was removed.  Torque to factory spec and call it good.  Any thoughts?  Other forums are saying don't do it.

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't...  It's too easy to just change them all and not have it be a potential issue...  I'd do all - or leave it alone.   :2vrolijk_21:

Gotta agree......all or none. Got mine back from the rare trip to the HD shop, next time I went to remove pipes one of the fronts was x-threaded. Luckily the stud came out with no damage and I replaced them all. No way the untrained jerk could not have known something was amiss when he put the nut on. I got lucky......1 week b4 Daytona  :drink:
