Burning oil
« on: March 11, 2013, 08:16:16 AM »

Just got my new 13 CVO Ultra. Rode it home from dealership about 200 miles away. It burned about 2/3rds of a quart of oil. Is this normal? Never exceeded 3000 rpm's.

If you didn't see it smoke, oily soot around the end of the pipes or any signs of leakage I would have to wonder if it was full to start with. Check it per the instructions in the manual.

Not trying to be a :smartass: but why do you think it burned oil? Did you check the oil level before you rode and after you rode to determine the difference? The "sweet spot" for oil in most of our bikes is between full and 1quart low. Lots of times if it is full it will blow out until it gets to that "sweet spot".

Did you actually check the oil level before the ride home?  If not, I would second E-Skunk's post.  Btw, I would never assume that either Harley or the dealer filled or checked the fluids properly.  Always check it yourself rather than assume someone else actually did their job.

If you do your own controlled test and you actually use that much oil, by all means contact the dealer ASAP.  And don't fall for the typical response of "put some miles on it and see what happens".

Agree with all of the above and actually if it measures 2/3 down from full that it just about right.  I aim for 1/2 down from full.

Same here chaos901, I have run all my bikes a little under full. When the engine is hot on a full tank I either would see it come out the breather or on a Softail it would trickle down the oil tank from the dipstick plug. Leave a little under full and all that goes away. Not half but definitely not full. :2vrolijk_21:

Ps, I don't think that his holds true on the VR engine. I read somewhere that they are more sensitive to this.

Let it sit for awhile - at least 5 mins after shutdown - before checking the oil.

And no... using 2/3 qt of oil in 200 miles is not at all normal. My bike hardly ever uses any oil... every time I check it, it's in the middle of the band on the dipstick hot... Right where I want it. I don't get any oil puking nor misting, either.

If you have oil loss, without signs of leaking or burning, you could be losing oil into the primary. My CVO fatbob sucked almost 3 quarts into the primary in 1000 miles. Oil level got so low I thought the engine was going to blow. the dealer found it all in the primary when checking all the seals.

Just to repeat what has already been said:  Just where did it show on the dip stick and how was the bike situated?  Over on the side stand or straight up?  As mentioned when hot, on the side stand, it should be somewhere between full and add oil.  I try to keep it halfway between when hot.  When I change oil I first add three quarts and run to get it hot and check again and add enough of the 4th quart to bring it to the half way point.  Hope that helps.

What did the dealer have to say?

Keep checking and take it back to the dealer everytime it needs oil so they have a record of the comsuption. mine did this also. thats when i found out that acceptiable oil lossage/consumption is 3 thats right 3quarts between services. New motor due to excessive oil consuption at 5k miles.
