Need help  burning navigation discs
« on: September 20, 2006, 11:10:03 AM »

I've tried to burn copies of the 2 CD discs that came w/ the advanced audio navigation system on my '07 Jester. I remember reading somewhere on this site that someone burned copies of their navigation CD's and keeps the originals at home in a safe place (since they cost something like $700 to replace) and carries the CD copies w/ them when traveling. I have tried burning the CD's as audio and DVD to no avail. Can someone walk me through the process?

I would imagine that they need to be burned as Data Discs on a CD and not a DVD blank.  I don't have that system, so can't be certain, but I'll bet that is the case.  Whatever program you're using to rip/burn should allow to burn data as well, but you have to tell it to do it, as most will automatically assume you want to copy audio or video.

Wasn't there something about burning it at a slower speed then the default is giving? [smiley=nixweiss.gif] I tried doing the search, but the parameters I was using couldn't find that post/thread.

That thread was (or at least the one I remember) about the radio software upgrade.  You did have to slow the burn speed down to no more than either 8x or 4x.  Probably the slower the better.  Make sure you're using high quality discs.  I ran into an issue using CompUSA branded discs.  The radio didn't like them.  I had to buy a Memorex blank to use.  Worked like a charm.

Yeah, Gary...you're right about that.  It was 8x, and you had to go in and tell it to do that. And, it was a data disc.

Also, when I was making my MP3 disc for the CD player, I burned it at 8x as well. I'm going to try it at higher speed/quality just to experiment a bit with my music copying software.

I've tried everything and I can't get any of my rip/burn programs to read the data on the discs.

If I remember correctly they are DVD discs, not CD.

My 19 year old son(what would we do without kids) finally was able to burn the CD using Nero (data backup/restore) program. Took almost 1 hour per disc. I havent been able to check and see if they work in the navigation system yet because my bike is in the shop w/ tranny fluid leak!

Do not have the nav unit on my 06 se ultra. I do use the MP3 function of the CD player. It reads 154 mp3 songs even if there are 200 on the disk. Also, I-Pod with FM modulator works great. I use the 30 gig I-pod and set up playlist and then just store it away in the trunk.
As to your disk burning problem, try using a slower write speed, 4X, and do not start, open or close any programs while the burner is working.  :)
