Re-Map needed? Added Rinehart Slip-on.
« on: March 14, 2013, 06:50:53 PM »

New to this whole CVO Street Glide world but I have switched out the stock slip-ons for Rineharts.  Do I need to get the bike "tuned" or re-mapped?  A fellow rider in my HOG chapter has same make , model, AND color as mine. He went with CFR's and is getting/needing to get the bike re-mapped.  Was told bikr will "turn into a monster" after the remap.  So my question is - Will a re-map improve performance or just put money in someone elses pocket?

depends on what you WANT......

it puts cash in others pockets

it voids the epa and mfg enging warranty

it may or may not make it run better, get better milage, or be cooler.

if you want max perf often a tuner will drop it all open loop and make it rich and you will get 20mpg

again - it depends on what you WANT

When I first got my bike, the only change I made was to add the Rinehart 4 inch slip ons.  Did not have to re map.  Once I made the changes beyond that, like true duals, I had to get a tuner.

when you run it you'll hear it popping some, it'll need to be re-mapped. my experience is to put tuner on. I have 4 bikes & all have tuners, just from changing air box & pipes on wifes bike to seuc. what you doing with stock mufflers? want to sell 'em. got friend who may be interested.

If just mufflers and not header or AC change, should not need a tune.  The stock system will "adjust" to a small change (muffler) but if you do anything else, you will need to tune.  However, while it's not a requirement, a good tuner should make any stock bike run better.  If you still have warranty (factory or extended), would be a good idea to go with an HD approved product (SE tuner) if you did decide to tune and have the dealer do it for good records.  Warranty is everything on these CVO's.....

The simple answer is you won't know if you need to touch up the tune until you do some riding.  As for the BS claim about the bike turning into a monster after a remap, I'd make sure to avoid the clown making that claim because he's either stupid or a con man.

A good tune can improve driveability even with zero modifications, so I recommend it even on totally stock bikes.  But just changing mufflers is not going to turn anything into a fire breathing monster, even if the worlds finest tuner is doing the tuning.  If you also change out the headpipes to something without a catalyst, then you will probably see enough change in flow to require a remap.

Sorry, but I disagree heartily with that advice.  First, ANY change to the stock calibration (map) other than one approved by H-D and the EPA, will technically void the powertrain warranty, no matter what device is used.  Read Harley's own info on the SEPST, it is for off road use only and illegal for street use.  The SEPST flags the ECM when you change the map, and from that point on it will report the fact you have a non-approved calibration whenever a dealership hooks the bike up to the computer.  Harley receives that data and could easily use it to deny a warranty claim if they want.  It's not the dealers decision to make, the warranty is from H-D.  As for the ESP, once again that decision isn't the dealers to make, the ESP administrator controls it and they tend to be much more strict lately than Harley is under warranty.  ESP isn't covered by federal warranty laws, so they can void coverage much more easily than Harley can under warranty.

If you are seriously worried about warranty, a smarter approach would be to avoid the SEPST and use one of the devices that allows you to reinstall the stock map before you return to the dealer for service.  The two I'm aware of that will do that are the TTS and the PV.
