March Engine Build FLHXSE3
« on: March 19, 2013, 07:06:40 PM »

Doing a little engine mod.  Here is what I'm doing:

Sent the Heads to T-Man he is to reshape, hand finish and giving me 2.130 intake and 1.630 exhaust.
T-Man 600 cam
SE 58mm Throttle Body
Woods Lifters
SE 6.7 Injectors
Fuel Moto Tapered Push Rods
SE 10.5 Pistons
Crank Run Out: .0045
TTS Mastertuner

All advice from the guru's is welcomed.  That's what I really like about this forum, it really helps me from screwing up too bad!  I questioned the builder about the 6.7 injectors and he said:  that's what Harley recommends, but we will put in whatever size it needs to tune correctly.

You will always find something to question with a motor build.  If you can't, someone else will. ::)  As has been said here before, trust your builder.  If you can't do that, you've started off on the wrong foot already. :nervous:

That being said, Not sure what you're saying with the crank runout.  Is that where it's at now, or where you'll end up, or both?

6.7 injectors are a little over kill for your 110'' build.....you will see some idling problems along with bad performance in the lower rpm's

That's where it's at now. From what I've read, it's right on the border line of doing the bottom end, which I really was hoping to avoid, your thoughts?

Doc,

That's also what I've read.  That's why I questioned the builder and he was actually in agreement with me and told me that we would put in whatever would make it tune correctly.  The tuner is Chad at Highway 65 Harley in Indianola, Iowa.  I asked him where he learned his trade and he said from the best, "Doc"!  Which is the main reason the bike is there.

I had the exact run out that you posted on my bike two years ago.  Had the typical stage 1 and did not open the motor.  This winter I measured the run out again and it is close to 11.  Personally I would not even consider any work unless the flywheel was addressed, but that is just me.  However there are many that have done similar builds as yours and lived happily ever after.  Hope yours runs well for years to come.

Good Luck on your build

The run out is excessive in my opinion. So if you do the build, don't use gear drives. Injectors are way too big. 6.7' are good for, up to , 170 HP. The 5.3's that Doc recommended are a bit more realistic. Bigger is not always better  :2vrolijk_21:.

I'm on the border line of doing the bottom end.  I agree with you on the injectors.

Looks like that will be a great build, Cowboy!

I want to do essentially that same thing at some point. If/when I do, I am going to do the whole bottom end with a welded/balanced crank and the Timken bearing at the same time, so I don't have to worry about the bottom end being able to handle the increased load. Never been a fan of the new style pressed-together crank assembly anyway. I want as little runout as I can get.

Good luck with the mods!

If you truly want as little runout as you can get, better start with someone else's crank.
