People, check your amp mounting in the saddlebag
« on: March 22, 2013, 04:10:52 PM »

I'm just about livid but have calmed down from volcanic this morning. Had a great ride down from oak ridge to Orlando on Thursday. A bit cold but sunny and got warm around Valdosta. Went out to wipe the bugs off this morning and noticed what I thought was a big bug on the side toward the back of the left saddlebag. Upon further examination, it wasn't a bug but a small hole. I figured somebody had walked by hit the bag in the parking lot. Well it wasn't. In the opening I noticed what looked like silver metal. I opened the bag and yep, the amp had come loose from the ride down and been rubbing on the inside of the bag on the trip down and ground a large area inside the bag and made the hole.
I contacted the SMHD and will take it in for warranty repair. I was going to wait and post this when I got back but as quite a few of us have this set-up, I wanted to get it out there quick to avoid any others having this problem. Here's the picks. You coulda fried an egg on my head this morning I was so mad...glad I got warranty
First pic is hole from outside

Haird....dont look inside and put a smiley decal on to cover the whole.  Then you can just smile when you see it.

Comes from the factory with double sided tape to hold it to the inside rear of the left saddlebag. Works really good, too >:( ...he said tongue in cheek
Greg, ain't quite ready to smile yet...

Another MOCO corner cutting move...as strong as the double sided tape is it will dry up eventually.....ish.

Dam!! Howard that relay sucks. I'll bet you were livid and then some. Is it going to be a repair or will they replace the bag? In any case, once it's rectified you may want to put some kind of padding down under the amp./ mounting bracket just as a cushion to prevent it from happening again,..if you can get something in there.
Hope you don't have any hassle in the fix. I feel for ya man. Good luck bother

Thanks Pete. Should be a full replace of the bag. Maybe swap the lid out to the new bag. Two weeks ago, i took this issue to SMHD (purchasing dealer) and they re-taped it as it had already fallen once. With this tape, it's a wonder nobody else had this problem. I will definitely keep a better eye on it from now on. It's the way they still mount the amp on the 2013 CVOs too. Just glad it didn't do it this summer before our two week trip to Sturgis.
I'll update when I visit the dealer Monday.

My amp came loose about a month after i bought the bike and has been banging around ever since. After seeing your pics i'm gonna go and secure it properly before the same thing happens. Thx for the heads up.

Another good reason I got rid of that goofy amp back there.   That's 10 now.    I went with an Arc audio amp on top of the radio.  BMW old amp would be loose in there all the time     it sucked.
