Thought I would update this.

So after a check of my driving record they found out that in January of this year I got a speeding ticket for 10 KM over. I was doing 100 km in a 90. I was on the DVP in my car. It was only $40.00 bucks and no points. I thought it was not even worth fighting and I just paid it.

Well my new quote now is $1066.00. It jumped $300.00 bucks for the next 3 years which is a total of $900.00 bucks.

FOR 10 KM OVER...ISH.

Anyway Gary was still the cheapest and I went with him.

I call BS!

In my experience; there is no way you got a ticket just for doing 10 over on the DVP, more likely that you got caught speeding and the guy who gave you the ticket REDUCED it to 10 over for you because up to that point your record was clean, or he was just cutting you a break regardless.

Generally insurance rates don't increase for non point assigned offences except for offences like operating an unsafe vehicle, what can happen is the insurance company can open an independent investigation if you tell them that you got caught "just doing 10 over" and view the original certificate where an "R" would have been written in the code box indicating that there was a reduction at the roadside.

All tickets are filed electronically now in Toronto, there will also be a copy of the officers's original speed that you were clocked at.

If this is in fact the case and an inquiry was made then it is more likely that the 30% increase is your company's way of telling you the no longer want you as a customer.

Because insurance in Ontario is mandatory, companies are forbidden from refusing a client and are bound to offer a quote and subsequent coverage, there is nothing that says that they are obligated to make it cheap.

When the company considers someone high risk they boost the rates hoping the client will seek coverage elsewhere, if that doesn't work then the client is placed on a binder called "facility" where they demand payment in cash up front. Traditionally these rates are in the 10-25k range!

The increase could also just mean that the insurance company is not interested in insuring your bike or even bikes in general.

I'm just sayin.

Your right. I was doing 114 KM and there is a "R" code on the ticket and I was only charged for 10 KM over.

Thanks for teaching me something I did not know. I learned some valuable information today but there was no need for the BS comment as I do not recall saying any.

Just saying.

Calling BS for me is just like the card game, no bad intent on my part, sorry you interpreted it that way.

I know this an old thread but the subject is still valid.

Well, prepare yourself for a 25% increase in insurance rates in Ontario. I just got my renewal yesterday from TD MM and it went from $930 to $1189. Yikes!

Reason given was that all motorcycle policies have an increase. Yeah right. Probably they increased the rates for the 5% discount they need to give on winter tires for autos in Ontario.

Called a couple of other brokers today (Mantra and Surnet) and they couldn't better TD MM.

The International Center in Toronto is hosting the Super Motorcycle show this weekend, maybe you can find a better deal at one of the many Insurance company's represented there?  There are a bunch of them looking for new business  :2vrolijk_21:

Cannot believe that this thread popped back up today as I was thinking about my insurance rate for this year. The above ticket drops off my record on the 22nd of this month which means I will have a clean record for my renewal in April. Ish....3 years just flew by.

For 2014 I paid $1,047.00 and in 2015 it was $1,018.00.

So a clean record and I hit the big five-ooooo.....lol. Hopefully that counters the 2016 25% increase.

I'd have to say I would quit riding at those ridiculous prices. I use State Farm and it is so cheap I had to make sure it was full coverage. A little less than $300 a year. Not sure why it's so costly up there.

Not only is it costly up here  >:( but years ago we could cancel the bike insurance for the winter months when we could not ride.  NOW!!!! in all there "ripoff" wisdom, the insurance company's decided that we have to pay for the whole year even though the riding season is 6 to 8 months long, and if you try to cancel in the fall they say that our coverage is "pro rated" for the year and there is no refund for canceling before the policy is finished  :'(
