Antenna Question
« on: September 22, 2006, 03:47:57 PM »

Can I cut down the antennas on my Ultra Screaming Eagle without losing reception or having any problems? I cannot stand the whipping.

The guy who owned my bike did it and I seem to have pretty good reception

For $5 bucks at Checker auto you can buy a stubby made out of rubber that will screw right in and work fine.

I also bought the stubby rubber antenna but did not like the look and it tends to keep a curved shape from the wind.  I simply used a drummel and cut the original antenna to about 20 inches and it works great.....although I use my XM most of the time.  Simply remove the rubber sleeve from the base and disconnect the antenna using a allen key.  Then cut the antenna the size you like.

DO NOT CUT THE CB ANTENNA.
If you shorten the CB antenna,  you will change the impedance of the antenna and therefore change the standing wave ratio.  If you transmit with this configuration,  you can damage the output amplifier of the transmitter.  If you need to cut the CB antenna,  you can go to radio shack and get an impedance matcher and a SWR meter and do the job right.

There are a number of members on this site that use the hidden antenna and have put it up in the fairing.  I rode that way for a couple years on my 04 SEEG however, now use the XM radio only.

Those little 18" spears are sharp as hell aren't they?

I bought a powered inside fairing antenna from E-glide Goodies.  I think I oriented it wrong.  I will remount it so that the elements will face the radio signal vice facing the windshield and ground.  Have to wait for Dakota Digital to finish fixing my air temp/clock/compass gauge, then the DF goes back on Fat Elvis.  I'll let everyone know if it works better than the 18" rubber car antenna DF gave me to stuff inside the fairing.
