Six speed transmission?
« on: September 23, 2006, 11:19:39 AM »

Have read various comments on six speed transmission on variety of bikes. What are pros/cons of Baker vs Revtech vs. HD SE?

Read Baker's literature - he says Japanese makers (Revtech) uses metal more suitable for soup cans. For me it is a toss-up between HD and Baker. HD went with a Baker DD6-inspired 6 speed for their '07 (and '06 Dyna), so they obviously saw the advantage of that design. I have read no complaints from anyone with an HD SE 6 speed. Many are happy with their 5 speeds, and I have no complaints - but I still keep trying to upshift from 5th. I'm thinking about doing the 6 over winter and am leaning towards the DD6.

The RevTech approach uses narrower than stock gears, but not necessarily made out of tin can material.

i put the baker 6 speed in,, the dd6  and i love it,, however i dont really think i improved too much on my milage,,,   seems i do 80 instead of 70 when im crusing at 3000 rpm.   so the rpm stays the same and so does the milage i guess...   i do love it tho

too soon to sy atill brealing in should hit 500 miles as soon as the weather breaks here! So far with the varying speed break in runs I have been intentionally shiftung alot. I did crank her out to about 80 the other night and it sounded good. Haven't really looked at mielage yet either due to breakin and the power commander has no maps so we are gonna dyno at 1000 then I'll report the results-may be a wee bit rich right now is my guess.

i was told by a really good guy that does mapping that the power commander doesnt need to be re-done or re-mapped..   my bike runs great so i'm leaving it..   does break in do anything on these gear sets??mine's been in only for about a month now,

I have had both, the HD SE 6 Speed on my Jims 120 engine, which I never had a problem with. Presently have a Baker OD6 on my 04 SEEG, so far I like it have not had the opportunity to put many miles on it only 1000 miles since I bought it,  as bike is in Phoenix and will be picking it up 1st week in May and off to Sedona then back to Calgary later in the week.

Both the bake DD6 and the HD Cruise Drive unit use a 1:1 final drive ratio in the Tranny and get a taller effective 6th gear by changing the primary ratio.  That's the Stock Cruise Drive HD unit only.  The older Screamin Eagle 6 speed and the Revtech used a taller 6th gear.  The end effect of RPM vs. MPH is the same, but since the 1:1 gear ratio is more efficiant it get's better mileage and is easier on the mechanical pieces.  Personally, I can't tell the difference.  I just like the lower RPMs cruising in 6th gear vs. 5th on my older Ultra.

Ride Safe,

had the baker dd6 on my '01 95 stage 2 with heads.  loved it alot more than the h-d 6 speed on my '07 cuse2.  baker was very quiet in all gears and a well built solid unit...frankly once the '07 gets out of warranty I am probably going to put the baker 5th gear fix into this transmission...just need to research and see if it will fit with the hydraulic clutch.  get the baker it is money well spent.
