New pinging
« on: March 26, 2013, 02:33:00 AM »

I had my '12 SG dynotuned about 6 mos ago, and it seemed to be running well.  A couple weeks ago, I noticed pinging during acceleration.  I assumed I got some bad gas, and tried filling up at different stations, but the pinging continued.  Tried some octane booster, and the pinging disappeared.  The outside temps here have been mild (50s to low 80s), and my oil temp hasn't gone above 250 that I'm aware of.  The mileage is approaching 20,000 miles.  CR is 10.5:1, Fueling 575 cam, Bassani 2:1 pipes, TTS Mastertune.

What would cause pinging to start out of the blue like this?  Has anyone else had a similar issue, and what did you do about it?

One person I've talked to wondered if carbon build up on the piston crown might've caused the compression to increase.

Any ideas or recommendations from the Harley wizards here?

Thanks in advance.

By chance do you know if the tuned was done in closed loop??? From time to time you will see where a bike was tuned will go back to the old lean tune.. Adaptive fuel is the term and for what ever reason certain bikes will run fine for a time and then end up back where they started. Try reloading the tune and if the bike runs better you know what you are up against. Intake leak will cause that as well.. or just that the bike was on the edge and now with change in fuel , heat etc it will need to be re tuned.
