LED light on plug for battery tender
« on: March 31, 2013, 03:20:26 PM »

Does the LED blink in codes? Is there a code if it needs to be plugged in? Just wondering. Alan

I'm not familiar with a battery tender that has LED's on the plug.  What brand and model are you using?

Do you have the manual that came with the tender?  That would be the best place to look for info, but if you don't have it try looking that brand and model up online.  Most companies these days post manuals in pdf on their websites.

OK, I'm guessing it's one of these new fangled harnesses Harley has out now.  The LED glows when the battery voltage drops to some preset level to let you know you need to charge the battery.  That's one way to do it, but if you use a smart charger it's probably better to just hook it up any time you aren't planning to ride for more than a few days.  It's a lot easier to get into the habit of doing that versus remembering to look for a glow from a little LED.

Btw, did you just get the harness (pigtail), or did they give you the actual charger to go with it?

Thanks to you I found it, the 2 you posted were close.

Battery Charging Harness with LED Charge Indicator

A well-maintained battery can last many years. This Battery Charging Harness simplifies charging the battery, and features an integrated LED indicator light that warns you when your battery voltage drops to a level that requires charging. Just attach the ring terminals to your battery and route the harness for easy access to the plug connector. When the LED glows, it's time to connect the bike to a Harley-Davidson Battery Tender®. Compatible with all Harley-Davidson® Battery Chargers, the harness features in-line 7.5 Amp fuse protection, and the plug connector is protected with a weather-shield cap when not in use.

Kewl... now you know what you have... finding the owners manual (or at least what the indicator lights mean) shouldn't be an issue. :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks GRC, the dealer only gave me the pigtails.
I have this feeling my tender and the HD pigtails some how do not match up. Yes I can plug them together, but I can't tell if it bumps up to charging mode. I say this because I had it plugged in to the tender,
when I went to start the bike, it didn't seem fully charged. I think someone, somewhere said the HD pigtails need to be with HD tender

I like "grc"'s answer.  Get used to plugging it in and you shouldn't have any problems.  I can only remember replacing one battery in a whole lot of years.  I even went so far as to keep the extra pigtail with the alligator clips to use as an emergency jumper cable.  Never used it for myself, but the couple I jumped in Rapid City (from upstate New York) swear by it.  Something weird 'bout leaving nobody behind, huh?

The HD tender is made by Beltran who is "Battery Tender". You do not have to use a HD tender with the new LED harness. The LED harness is supposed to tell you when to use the tender, but you should always use the tender so it really is just a gimmick. If you want to know charge status look at the tender itself, they all have a light that indicates status of the battery it is connected to. Instructions with tender will have all this info.
