Engine Performance Mods.
« on: April 03, 2013, 11:05:48 AM »

Hi Guys,
I have spent the last few months getting my 2012 CVO Convertible to look the way i want it to and am now going to move onto Performance,
I am pretty new to engine mods on Harley's as i come from a superbike background! all my race bikes were garrage prepared!
I have already purchased a Rinehart Crossback exhaust system and HD SEPST (they are going to be fitted next weekend)
I live out in Dubai so good tuners etc are hard to come by! the HD mechanics are pretty good (apparently) and do have a Dyno but are limited when it comes to doing more than fitting parts!
I have no access to parts in Dubai so it will all have to shipped from the States, not a problem, just did it with the Exhaust from FuelMoto and it was a breeze, (great customer service)
I never really take the bike much over a 100mph but do love Torque! looking for everything i need so i can order it all up and get it fitted in one shot!
I did consider the Screaming Eagle Pro Race Kit, but i think you guys could probably put something better together!
Your help would be greatly appreciated guys, but please bear with me and try not to loose me!
Thanks,
Charlie

you need to think carefully where you want the torque. what makes super torque and power at 3000 rpm will suck at at 6000 and vice versa - ie if you make the bike peak at 6000 rpm it will suck at 3000 rpm. look at the dyno charts and you will see that the big race cams have the peak way to the right.

to get the most torque at low rpm you want big mufflers and long small dia exh and early closing cams.

or just really big cubes

if you are limited to what a dealer can do - 255 or 204 or some such with cams.

or just put in a 120 and ride it - thats really the only thing that will get you BIG power - in a "box with HD on it" that a sert tune is avail for.

the limiting factor is where you are and what services are available. you should look at the hd stuff [because your hd guy can probably tune it] , download the pdf of the screamin eagle stuff - there are dyno charts that are sort of decent for what it what.

If big torque is what you want then perhaps a look at a Wood TW-400-6 cam, his 188 psi springs, or AV&V's, S/E 10.5 cr pistons, a set of S&S roller rockers, along with a 58mm t/body would put you in that zone.........but good.  :2vrolijk_21:

Hi Hillsidecycles,
Thanks for the repply,
Thats what I'm looking for, a list of components that will work together to give me what I'm looking for!
I'm looking for the power in the middle,(not too far to the right)
What kind of results do you think this kind of set up will give me? and where would the power be?
Thanks

Hi Prodrag,
Thanks for your repply,
It does get hot out here, believe me! hitting 50c on a regular basis in June, July and August hence thats when im going to get the engine mods done!
What other parts would i need and what would i expect from 9.8-1 compression with the 570 cams?
Thanks,
Charlie

If there are no tuners in the area, and you say the HD dealership is highly suspect when it comes to doing anything but fitting parts, I would be very cautious about doing mods to the engine.  If they can't tune a bike after just fitting an exhaust system, doing so after a cam/compression change would have me a bit concerned about their capability.  Dumping a canned map in the bike, especially one that HD provides, would be something I'd probably not be happy with.  Anybody can change parts...making those parts play well together is another ballgame.  JMO...

Torque would be well in the 120's easily, and your cold cranking compression would not be any more that you currently have,(and actually less) and that cams timing, would help shed more heat than your 255's.

Hi Midnight Rider,
I totally understand what your saying and what your giving me is for sure 100% good sensible advise! and i genuinely thank you for that,
To be honest I'm probably being a little too hard on the tuning guys over here! well i hope i am or if not, I'm heading for troubled waters!!
I think they will be fine with regards to putting it all together, tuning and getting it running properly but would be concerned letting them carry out any machine work etc.
I love my CVO but I'm just looking for something more! not stupid amounts more, just  a little more!
Not one for chasing HP, done all that on Superbikes 20 years ago! touched 200mph on a supercharged Honda Blackbird whilst in my 20s and before my brain had fully formed! have no intention of trying anything like that again!
Thanks Again,
Charlie

ide look into a T-MAX or other auto tuners, with the build i suggested,a canned map then let it auto tune would be fine (even a PC-V would work fine)

I have the Rinehart Crossback Pipes and HD SEPST being fitted at the weekend, went with the HD SEPST as the tuner is fitting them on a daily basis and has been for a few years!
I know i should have probably gone for a good 2 into 1 one pipe (fat cat or similar) but couldn't resist the Crossbacks, look like they were made for the Convertible and are supposed to perform pretty good for a 2 into 2?

Looking for hp over 110 and torque in the late 120s, early 130s!
Needs to be parts install and tune, no major machine work! Tune in Dubai after fitting parts,
Looking for all the bits I need to get it sorted hear in Dubai, want to get the work done in one go so if it's advantageous to me to do it in one go and Do it now!
Want to buy the whole lot in one go! No afterthoughts!
Shifting below 4500rpm! Don't want to have to hit 6k to feel the power!
Reliable, good fun, no drammas! Can be used as a everyday ride if wanted!
Not to get stupid with price but want to spend now rather than have regrets later!
Let me know what you advise and options you have available!
Thanks,
Charlie
