Garage flooring decision
« on: April 07, 2013, 12:27:44 PM »

I'm looking to place flooring tiles in our garage to improve my footing (our floor is so smooth it is slick) and dress up the look a little. Right now I am trying to decide between the Craftsman PVC tile and the Craftsman polypropylene tile. Both are on sale right now and the price per square foot is almost equal.
I've researched reviews on both tiles and understand the stats for both, but the store only has the PVC tiles on display. :-\

The Poly tile is rigid, is 12x12, weighs almost a pound per tile, and is 1/2 inch thick.
The PVC tile is flexible, is 18x18, weighs over 2 1/2 pounds per tile, and is 1/4 in thick.

Does anyone have experience with one or both of these tiles?
Do the lighter colored tiles show tire marks? If so, are they relatively easy to clean?
Does the surface (of either) perform well with the jiffy stand (slides or digs in)?

Lastly, and slightly off-topic, does anyone know if the Harley tiles fit with other standard tiles? I am wondering if I could mix a few Harley tiles in with a garage full of less expensive tiles.

Yes, I know racedeck has an awesome product, but their price is more than I want to spend.

Thanks.

Check out garagejournal.com forum section.  I researched garage flooring choices there before deciding on RaceDeck.

Polypropylene will have better chemical resistance than PVC and is less prone to oxidation that causes them to get brittle.  The more recent PVC products are okay in that regard, but do you know where the tiles come from (i.e. China where they will mix whatever they can get away with into the formula)?

I have the race deck tiles and they have been in my garage for 3 years, every day traffic and having a 4 wheel drive wagon parking bay with them as well, they show no signs of deterioration.

The orange tiles will get some black marks from tires but they clean up OK with a bit of sugar soap detergent.
I use a side stand coaster to save the side stand from gouging the surface.

These tiles are durable and only 3/8" (10mm) thick.

Aussie, thanks for the tips on cleaning and the side stand. I wondered about how the colored tiles would show tire marks; good to know that the orange cleans fairly easily.  I wanted some color, but not at the expense of creating painful cleaning. I hadn't thought about the side stand gouging the tiles.

I should have some pics to post soon.

DONE- Garage flooring decision

I ordered my floor late Monday afternoon; it arrived on Friday.  It took my husband and I about an hour to install the tiles.  After two hours of work we had completely reset and reorganized our garage.  I am very happy with the racedeck product and customer service.   :2vrolijk_21:
