Engine Restarts
« on: April 11, 2013, 12:44:27 AM »

Anyone else have problems with your engine restarting when it is hot? I have noticed mine at times when hot it is stubborn to restart. I can let it set for about 10 minutes and no problem. Could it be a coil issue? Just thinking of restarting problems older hot rods I used to work on.

Go the same bike and on hot restart is sucks. Been that way since new.
Most noticeable on a hot day and the short shut down when fueling up.

One thing I got use to doing which helps some is to crack the the throttle a bit. About 1/8" or so.

Are you leaving it in gear or restarting in neutral.  Even with the clutch pulled in while in gear it's easier to restart in neutral.  Easier on the starter's wear and tear too.  Since your starter is so much more time and expense to change than the newer ones that's a worthwhile concern too.

Same bike, same problem.

If I leave it in neutral, no clutch, no throttle and hit the button while the bike is on the kick stand, it starts right up every time!

You probably don't have a compression release, have a look at the S&S easy cam thread, I'm having similar issues... have the bike torn down now and will be installing the cams Monday.

Seems as if engine is under tremendous compression when attempting to start with hot engine. Cold engine turns over once maybe twice then starts. But hot I put trans in neutral to start...but engine just acts like it needs a compression release. I don't know extent of engine work on bike...any ideas how I can find out?

I would start with a compression test.

After that you might work backwords and pull the pipe and cam cover should be able to with a dental mirror read the numbers on the cam lobe.   Maybe use a bore scope and see if you have a dished / domed piston or a flat top.   Run a voltage test on the starter maybe its just worn out.   Check battery cables.
hold old is the battery is it putting out what it is supposed to?

What did you decide on?

It could be a timing issue. What has been done to the bike? Have you tried to open the throttle just a bit? It could be a number of issues. How does it run when you are riding? Any loss of power? last question, how many miles on the bike?

I had the same problem in Daytona one night.  Lots of traffic on Main St.  HOT HOT HOT!

Parked bike and went to move it a few seconds after I parked and just turned over, would not fire up.  Came back later after it cooled down and started right up.

Dunno but not too worried about it, computer saftey thing I suppose.

 :bulb2:

Might want to check that the compression releases are actually working.   Hot engine (Heat) / no compression release could result in the same problem, at least till the pressure subsides then it should/will start again.

Duane,

I would be concerned with starter or battery would be the first places I would look, from there I would also try and gather data about the hardware in the bike.

I would do a compression test which should help enlighten the person to what this motor is doing provided they do the compression test correctly.

Hold throttle wide open and turn motor over till the the gauge doesnt move any futher.
