Ken, you are so damn cute and I'm so jealous that you are sitting outside in a short sleeve shirt.   8).  Only 52 here today.  :-\.  I haven't shed my stocking hat yet this year.   :(

Oh! Ummmm... Gee, thanks Judy!

Our Dogwoods are still in bloom!

And so are our GIGANTIC mutant Azaleas!

Full Disclosure: These are actually my favorite ones... they are... ummm... errr... RUBY RED! But I'm getting some nice, proper ORANGE Native Azaleas for next year tho... So WATCH OUT, you Ruby riders!

I just like doing things and especially building things, Judy.  Up in Ohio, you don't have the overheating problem we have down here with swimming pools... Above about 85 it's not very refreshing when it's 100 degrees out.

Peter/Howard... I picked up some Newcastle Brown Ale just now in all y'alls' honor, and I'm drinking it this fine evening sitting on the deck with Mary. And Peter... "all y'alls'" is Suth'rn plural possessive!

Ken

Glad ya found some at your local, bottoms up to ya Ken :drink: :2vrolijk_21:

The pool is looking great. I'm sure it'll get a lot of us this summer.

Those varmints were outrageous, it gos to show how nature moves in when things are left. Your yard looks great as well. Looks as though you have wood lands at the back of you, how nice is that. Here I've got is brick, concrete and more brick. The closest wood lands to me is 10 miles away at Eping forest.

Enjoy your pool and Newcastle Brown :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks, Peter! We did find another couple of bird skeletons at the deep end when the pool guys were vacuuming all of the settled crud out this week... but it's certified Varmint Free now. No further sign of those amorous black rat snakes, either!

We have 8 acres here - all of which is thick woods except the cleared areas of the small front yard, the bit larger backyard, and the pool area. This is just fine with me... I don't want much grass to mow anyway. It's a big triangular lot with the house about in the middle. You can't even see the house from the cul de sac. The entire lot slopes downhill from the street, with several ravines going down to a little dry creek at the back. We got this place in a short sale for a really good price last October. Somebody put a ton of money into it, and lost their shirt in the housing meltdown. I love being deep in the woods... it has always been my dream to have some land, and this is the first time I ever have.

We might put a big koi pond in eventually where much of the grass now is in the front yard. I'd much rather tend to a koi pond than mow grass. Come to think of it, I'd rather do just about ANYTHING than mow grass!

The only bad thing is having to tote the big trash bin and recycling bin up the 500-foot-long winding uphill-all-the-way driveway to the street... But that's only once a week, and I need the exercise anyway.

I installed RaceDeck in my garage.  Keep in mind that if you use white RD tiles, they'll be the hardest to keep clean.  For a lighter color of tile, the silver will do better at not showing dirt, tire marks, etc. I attached a pic of my garage floor.  Good luck. House looks great.

Actually had a "dog" yesterday and thought if you at the pool Ken hoping it was going well. Dog being a nickname for Newcastle. Pete has probably heard/used that a few times.

Tha picture must have been taken Thursday or Friday as yesterday and today are a total washout. What does the rain do to your new salt water system?  Same as a chlorine based pool?

Will be glad when the rain stops and the sun comes back. We are 11 plus inches ahead already for the year. Been a wet few months to start 2013.

Judy, maybe this cold front coming through will finally clear things out in Ohio and make way for warm weather

Howard - I took the pics on Thursday and Friday... which were both mockingly nice, warm, and sunny. Friday night, the bottom fell out of the weather, and it's been cool and rainy ever since, with a minimum 40% chance of rain as far out as the forecast goes. Its been raining steadily here since 11:00 last night, and will likely rain all day and into tomorrow. Going to be fairly rainy weather here for at least the next week. Mary's herbs are lovin' it... but I'm getting tired of it.

I don't know what the rain will do to the pool... may need to add another bag of salt. The salt system monitors the salt content, and it's supposed to be 2700-3200 PPM. It was 3000 PPM yesterday... Haven't bothered to venture outside to look today, and not planning to!

Re: the dog... Here's what the Newcastle back label says about that:

Hey Ken, adding salt doesn't increase your PPM on your chlorine count.  Salt doesn't get "ate up" nor does it "burn up" from the sun.  The only time you need to add salt is water splashing and loosing water outside the pool will lower your salt level.  What you do need with all this rain is to pour some shock in your pool.  Your chlorinator is working overtime with this rain because rain contains acid and acid lowers your chlorine level.  Whenever we have a Hugh rain fall here I always add a bag of granular shock mixed in a bucket with the pool water to dissolve it and then I pour it back in the pool.  Depending on the size of your pool you can read on the bag how much to add.  This shock just gives your chlorinator a boost.  Adding more salt will not increase your chlorine level.

Thanks, Judy. I was talking about the salt PPM, not the chlorine PPM. What I meant was that since the salt system decomposes the salt (NaCl) to free the chlorine via electrolysis, at the rate it's set to do so, as it does that the salt gets temporarily used up until the hypochlorous acid gets converted back to salt, and you may have to add more salt periodically to maintain the 3000 PPM. My concern right now is that the pool has gone right up to overflowing with all of the rain... over 4" up in two days... and all of that fresh rainwater dilutes the salt content in the pool water.

I need to shock it as well as soon as the rain stops. I use Leslie's non-chlorine shock, which is 38% Potassium Monopersulfate that chemically breaks the bonds between the chlorine and inorganic elements in the water to make the chlorine available for disinfecting and killing algae.

I am also quite concerned right now because my pump is not even running, and thus the salt system isn't either... the PVC plumbing sprung a leak and the pool guys were SUPPOSED to fix it yesterday - but didn't because of all the bleeping RAIN! I may need to throw some granular chlorine in, until the pump is running again. I have a chlorine floater, but that doesn't really do much good in still water. I just don't want an algae bloom from the rain. Hopefully they will fix it tomorrow... or I will fix it myself!

BTW, it's pouring rain here right now... ARRRRRGH! I may need an ARK soon!

Your garage floor looks great! Thanks for the pic!

I have researched a lot of tiles, and RaceDeck is the best... along with SwissTrax. They are also the most expensive, but I don't want to buy cheap stuff that may be problematic 3 years from now.

The big problem is that this friggin swimming pool is a real money pit right now because we're having to do so many things to make it work right. So, the garage is just going to have to wait a few months...

HA! Something like that... We are under river flood warnings, but we get those with every decent rain. I just need several hours of dry weather to get the #%*& pool plumbing fixed!
