Ever hear of Porosity?
« on: September 25, 2006, 11:20:05 PM »

Well here is the latest.  My rear cylinder head has had a brownish stain coming from behind the spark plug for a while.  At my last service I had the tech look into it.  Up till then I was just living with the ugly issue.  The head has porosity.  Which means oil is actually migrating through the pours of the casting.  New head is on order and bike will go back to shop soon.  So far my list looks like this,  Blown oil cooler hose causing trailer ride, front motor mount, ignition switch recall, and now porosity.  I know this doesn't look like a big list, but my Metric riding friends are enjoying giving me lots of grief about my 30 thousand plus bike.  Has anyone else had a porosity problem like this?

I have not personally had that problem on my bikes but I have read about it being a problem on some older models of Harleys. It has supposed to have gotten better in recent years but I have seen a thread where someone has that problem now on their 2007 SEU as far as the transmission case is concerned and is being replaced. That person stated that his shop told him it was one of several 2007s that have had a transmission case porosity problem.
Good luck with your repairs.

Warm Welcome here funseeker57! [smiley=drink.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=banana.gif]

Sorry to hear about your problems. Glad to hear your dealer is taking care of you. Which scooter you ride? I also was wondering what the ignition switch recall is about? [smiley=nixweiss.gif] Thanks Bro, God Bless!

Hi JR,
That ignition switch problem was on some 2006 touring bikes. If you did not get a letter you should be OK but if you go to the Harley website and go to the maintenance section and log in with your vin# it will tell you if there is any notices on your bike.

Sounds like you have your porosity under control.

It has been an issue and it shows up from time to time where castings are involved.  Simply caused by a bad casting job for many different reasons.

A certain German car maker who has a link to Harley had a major problem with a supplier some 5 years ago or so and replaced hundreds of engines for this issue with their castings.

Hopefully this is a rare event for Harley and its heads.

Sorry to hear about your problem.  I had the similar problem with my '99 Ultra.  The early twin cams had problem with porous castings.  Mine was the crankcase itself causing weeping of oil.  Took me almost two years of complaints before issue was finally resolved.  Service kept telling me it was just residue from when the oil filter was changed and some oil spilled onto motor.  As it got worse over time they finally had to give up on that excuse and start looking for the real problem.  Jeez you'd think this would be over by now.

Yes, I have heard of it. My '07  SE ULtra has been at the dealer for the last 2 weeks due to a tranny oil leak supposedly caused by porosity in the casting of the tranny case. The MOCO shipped a new housing last week and my dealer refused to put it on because he said it was more porous than the original case ( he said the inside of the casting looks like the craters on the moon). Talked to my dealer today and the second replacement "handpicked" tranny case was received yesterday and my dealer said they are going to put it on because it "meets the quality  control standards of the MOCO". I asked what that means and he said it has a lot of visible  porosity also but he has been instructed by the MOCO to go with it so thats what he will do and we will see if it fixes the problem!!!! My bike is an 06 flhtcuse.  I have about 6500 miles on it.  Purchased last Feb.  The dealer is going to call me when the new head comes in.  I'm a little surprised from the response.  I figured I was the only one with this problem.  Things you learn here!
