Sounds like you have your porosity under control.

It has been an issue and it shows up from time to time where castings are involved.

2007  Ultra Classic OIL LEAK ----
« Reply #16 on: September 27, 2006, 07:17:42 PM »

Well I now have 1200 miles on my 2007 $35,000.00 dream,--- bike well is was. To stop the oil leak the MoCo is sending new cases --- yes that is right -- they are going to tear down a new bike and change the cases. This is a bunch of CRAP.
Is there anyone else that has had this done?

I didn't like the noise in the gear set but it looks like that was a small thing now. On my last two bikes I installed the Baker DD6 and I think HD could have taken a lesson from that.

I have been told that others are finding the 07 gears, 1st and 5th to sound bad. Have you?

I'm starting to second guess my order of an 07 SE UC. I have had 2 stock Harleys and never had any of such problems!  Now I'm getting a little nervous. Not that I don't want to join your ranks (you guys/gals are awesome) but I'm worried a little between this (leaking) and the heat and the tranny noise and the wobble and warranty issues etc..... What worries me the most is the fact that the MOCO and or dealers in some locals want to always push towards the "Thats normal nature of the beast thing" Sometimes they frustrate me.:-[

Man I feel for ya. Gotta think if I was in your shoes, I wouldn't settle for anything less than a new factory motor, or take the bike back.  Just heard a story of a Goldwing that had to be torn down at a couple hundred miles, and he managed to get a new bike. The factory seals on everything associated with a teardown can only be reproduced at the factory. Even a new motor would leave a lot to be desired. Good luck and let us know the outcome.

Couldn't agree more.  That is certainly not a prospect for new cases and a shop rebuild.  Time for a new motor.  With regard to the gear noise.  The 5th gear noise problem with the new six speeds appears to be across the board with all new models.  Truly sorry about your problem and think it would be worth the effort to get it repaired correctly.

I just brought my bike home from the dealer with a new rear cylinder head.  Other than finger prints everywhere, the bike seems fine.  Runs just like it did before.  Now the latest--My front brake rotors are warped.  I have 6500 miles and I don't ride like a jerk.  Parts are on order, and there will be another warranty visit for me.  On the favorable side, everyone in the service department knows me by name.

Has anyone been able to determine if this 5th gear noise is actually due to a problem, or is it just that the helical 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th are much quieter than the normally noisier straight-cut 5th?

The trans noise is normal according to HD and two local dealers. I have had NO PROBLEMS with my 07 FLHTCUSE2. It is one hell of a great bike that runs like a champ. Yes, it has some associated noises from the trans and rocker box but it really doesn't bother me. None of the noises can be heard anymore since the exhaust was changed and it runs much better since I re-programmed the ECM with a SERT. If I wanted a bike that is noise free I would have bought a Goldwing !!

I have had the same issue with my 2006 SE Fatboy, it was the residue oil that generated on top of front cylinder head behind the headbolt. It first they said it might be normal for new bikes and that it should go away, but then they agreed that it was more than normal. They ended up changing the rocker cover gasket and re-sealed the front cylinder rocker box. No more oil.

Thanks for the input and picture Screamer.  On my bike the oil was on the rear cylinder, and it seemed to be coming from the tunnel you see when you get down and look behind the spark plug.  I believe you can see clear through to the other side when you peek in there.  I only have about 200 miles on the motor since I got the bike back, but so far so good.  I'm pleased the dealership took care of me.

As of today, I've heard of porosity, too.  Rear cylinder head on the ol' B/B SEEG.  A new one's got a seat on a plane tonight headed to Memphis.

I think the reason for not completely copying the whole Baker trans is probably the same reason they didn't put the Torrington bearing in the Evo instead of INS bearing, overall $$$$$$$, instead of overall quality. Just my 2 cents.
