There have been several comments both here and through other means almost suggesting the HD mechanic didn't put the rings in this way. I ain't buying it. Just too much of a coincidence that the guy, working on the right side putting rings on the right side and forgetting to rotate them and having all the gaps line up centered over the pin. The front cylinder rings were in the location as specified in the service manual.

Rings can rotate in normal use.  To have them rotate and all line up centered over the pin would be like winning the lottery.  I wouldn't buy it either...

so sorry Duane

I'm looking at it as forced maintenance Candy. No biggie. Just couldn't start on anything until about a month ago. And with stuff going on at work right now I couldn't start putting it all together if "all" the parts were in the garage. Have a delay from Baker with the trans, and a delay with Drago's with the pipes.

Timing may work out OK though. The trans may be back this week so I can do all that sometime after the next 10 days. The pipes would be last to go on anyway so that is not much of an issue - now.

Sure looks like super-heated. Do you get stuck in traffic a lot?

What oil?

After multiple delays, too much $$$ and sometimes just not enough time, the bike is done.
1st ride to seat the rings and it runs real good. Stronger there ever, I can really feel a mid range difference.

I put the old V&H TD's back on. The sound is very different from what I remember - cams  :nixweiss: increased compression  :nixweiss:

Disappointed in the Jet Hot coating this time around. On my very hot running D&D's the coating after 3 years still looks great, just a slightly different shift of color and shine between the front and rear pipes.

I had planned on leaving the covers off for a few weeks while everything was checked out - and to make it easier to clean if the dip stick continued it's "launch mission.

This is from after just a few minutes of running. And the dull section has a gritty finish now.

Best thing though is after what seemed like only the 2nd or 3rd rpm it was running.

Shifts better then it ever did too.

I sent the trans back to baker and they went through it, 4 years into the 5 year warranty.
They replaced every wear item and shipped it back with everything I needed to reinstall, gaskets, bearings, snap rings etc except lube, even a new tensioner.

Plenty of meat for heli-coils?  Have had to do that in some cam chest holes a few times.  An "oh-chit" moment when it pulls but then not really a big deal.  Glad to read you've finally got it running again and that it feels and good.  Enjoy the autumn rides!

Figured it was just a matter of time with that thread. I use a torque wrench every time and only go to 100.
Really is a poor setup. Would have been a better idea for full threads and put in separate alignment dowels.

Holes inside the alignment dowels have always been the first to go for me too.  Couple of times have pre-emptively gone to heli-coil inserts there just because didn't like the feel even though the bolts still tightened that particular time.  That's just no place to screw around.  Make it right.

First ride is all good. Have a small leak at the only seal I didn't change, the one you can't buy!

The chrome oil line kit has a compression fitting on one end and on the other a slip fit with a special rubber seal. HD does not sell the seal separate. It is only available with the "does not wear out" chrome nut and fitting for $25  >:(

Sandwiched up the buggered seal with a drain plug ring on one side and a cam chest ring on the either, so far it looks like it will work.
