How to remove exhaust flanges on stock pipes?
« on: April 16, 2013, 10:31:27 PM »

I bought a used Fullsac x pipe. It doesn't have the exhaust flanges to bolt up to the heads. Are they all sold that way? How do I remove the slip ring that holds the flanges on the stock pipe? I don't have any slip ring pliers. Is that the only way to remove them? I haven't tried prying them off with a screwdriver yet. Concerened about damaging them. Thanks, Rick

Pipes normally do not come with these.  Personally, I always just buy a new set and install them (5-6 bucks each).

It can be done without a set of reverse snap ring pliers, however its a real b*tch to do with out them.  The retainer ring requires a considerable amount of force to spread far enough to clear the lip.

It is well worth getting heavy duty snap ring pliers from Sears Craftsman.  The bigger and heavier duty the better.  Real pain to muscle that snap ring around without them.

Not the best solution but for a one time shot ive had good luck in the past putting a small set of vice grips on either side and spreading them apart

Have never had a problem using a screwdriver. Work one gap-edge over lip and slowly rotate......snap its off. Have never broken one.

I was working with a small engine mechanic at work today and he recommended using a screwdiver also. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for everyones advise.

Getting them off with a screw driver is not a huge problem.  Its putting them on the new pipe without a reverse snap ring pliers that is challenging.

I never had a problem putting them on either.....and I don't use the snap ring pliers.

So whats your trick to spreading them enough to enable you to install them so easily?

I takes only a few seconds with zero effort to install them without scratching the pipes coating using a very affordable (or borrowed) reverse snap ring pliers.

I guess thats my next challange. Putting the flanges and snap rings on the Fullsac pipe and not scratching off the coating. Since these rings don't have holes in the at the ends I don't see how reverse SR pliers will be of much help. All the pliers I've seen have pointed tips to go into holes at the ends of the rings. Are there different type pliers?

I prefer to use regular pliers over the screw driver or snap ring pliers :nixweiss:

Just grab one side with a pair of pliers and off it comes of course dont play king kong with it, but super easy you will see.  prolly get it part way with just your hands get one side started and the other will follow.

Back on,
Half put it on the new pipe after you have the flanges on and then just a little pull and slide it on the new pipe. (much like you used to start a chain or a new tire on a bicycle and it will go on the rest of the way pretty easy

It really is that easy the rings are pretty sturdy anyhow.

Yes...there are all types of reverse pliers that work very well for this application...    :2vrolijk_21:
