2soaper,
Pinging is one of those subjects that you get as many opinions as you do people talking. Sorry if you think we were having fun at your expense. The problem is, short of riding your bike and knowing exactly what you have done to it, looking at your plugs, actually living where you do and knowing what the gas is like, I'd have been talkin out my a$$ offering any advice. Common causes of pinging are high compression engines, low grade gas, the wrong heat range spark plugs, poor engine timing, spark plugs glazed over ( as Beags said octane booster is a big culprit for this ) and a few others I can't recall at this moment.
Maybe we should have left the thread alone, but you know some days this site is the only thing between me gettin through the day and me chokin the chit out of some idiot who really deserves it. Next to being able to get on my H-D and puttin a couple hundred miles behind me, humor is the only way I cope.

2soaper,

Reading this thread just gave me total deja vu, I just recently experienced what sounds like a similar experience, a knock started out of no where when I pulled up to a stop.
read my thread below, and go tell your friend to get his 'NUT" checked  :-?  ;D

If your friend is experiencing pinging ... questions to ask.

1. was the bike tuned with a power commander race tuner or by seat of the pants or some other method.

2.  was there a cam change or any advance gears added

3.  was there any headwork done ....

4.  Any idea what the bike's static compression is ....   based on cam might tell you something

5.  Possibility of quick closing intake with over compression

6.   Anyone played with the his timing?

7.   Have you tried adding octane booster to 93 octane fuel if so does the problem go away

8.   Have you run any injector cleaner in the gas?

9.   Is it Carb or is it Injected
