Auxiliary Lamp Installation
« on: April 25, 2013, 06:50:17 AM »

I am installing Auxiliary Lamps to my 2012 Street Glide and need some advice.

1, The instructions that came with the kit does not show where the 2 grey wires from the passing lamps plug into, they are supplied with bare wire ends and there are a few terminals to crimp on which I have no problem doing that.

I want to connect the passing lamps having the toggle switch on the inner fairing isolate passing lamps when not required, the toggle switch instruction are very clear but still no instruction as to were these grey passing lamp wires go.
Were do these 2 grey passing lamp wire plug into?

2, Looking around the jungle behind the fairing to see if anything was out of place I noticed a black wire with a white plug coming out the side of the Head Lamp Loom, also there is a Terminal on the left side of triple clamp above left fork tube.
Is this a second ground for the head lamp and does this wire plug onto it?

I had a close look at the terminal well the best I could see and it looks like nothing was plug onto it, no scrape marks from female terminal so not quite sure about it!!!

See pictures showing black wire with white plug (Head Lamp Loom) and Terminal with nothing connected to it.

Any ideas?

that appears to be sitting on metal, so it must be a ground connection

try following the turn signal wires back and see if you find the connector. don't know it it would be with the headlight wire

'Do you have a service manual with a wiring diagram?  I put the crash bar mounted auxiliary lamps on my wife's SG and just looked in the wiring diagram for the correct wires.  I added a spot light switch to control them instead of the handlebar mounted push button they came with.  If you need I could research when I have time.

Turn signals are OK.

Not sure if its for the Head Lamp but the wire coming out from this loom is black.

Still need some help with the Passing Lamp wires, not instruction as to where to connect them.

Ahh yes... Now I remember how I wired my passing lamps! Anton had PMed me about this but I couldn't remember how I did it. I have an excellent memory - but its quite short.

The passing lamps wire into the four-wire connectors with the turn signals, as Neal pointed out above.

I also wired in the switch (that came with the aux light bracket kit) that mounts in the fairing skirt with the Cruise and Acc switches. I think the instructions for this came with the kit. It wires into the big 12-pin fairing skirt electrical connector. That much I DO remember!

Ok will let you know how it goes.

One more thing I forgot, the black wire that comes out the side of the head lamp wiring loom, looks like its an earth/ground connection.

There is an earth at the head lamp plug total of 3 wires (black/yellow & white) but this one out the side about 12 inches from the head lamp plug has got me thinking, it may have dislodged from this terminal when I pull the fairing off  :nixweiss:

Anton, I have no idea what that other ground wire is. I don't remember there being one on my bike, but perhaps there was. Or, it could be an international thing. If everything works, I wouldn't worry about it.

Also, to get into the lower fairing to install the switch for the spots, remove your tank first. There's much more room to work without the tank there.

You asked me about using a screwdriver to free the forks from the lock position. Yes, I have done this to make it easier to get to things. It can be a little tricky to get the forks locked again in order to reinstall the ignition switch properly, though. You will need to fiddle with the lock deep in the steering head with the long screwdriver to get it back into the proper position to accept the ignition switch. The service manual discusses this procedure.

Good luck with this! If you get stuck, let us know...

Problem solved, wire coming out of head lamp loom is GND3 according to the wiring diagram.
Wire may not have been connected in the first place as the FLHXSE have no passing lamps.
On installation the passing lamps are grounded to the front fork brackets, from there the ground would need to travel to the main power supply (battery) or solid ground. Steering stem to frame would not be a solid ground, hence the spade terminal on the fork bracket.
Wiring diagram shows the wire from the head lamp loom supplies the ground to the front fork bracket.

As for the switch assembly I managed to assemble it with out removing anything, ended up gaining access from the underside of the trim that holds the switches using a universal socket with a 25 torx bit, it was a bit fiddly though but with a bit of patience and steady hands it was a breeze.
So all good now.

Originally I thought the passing lamps would come on when the high beam was switched on.
When head lamp is on low beam with spot switch on passing lamps illuminate, however when high beam is switched on with spot switch on passing lamps go out. Is this the way they are designed to work?

Wiring diagram, note the GND3 grounded to upper fork bracket.
