Dropping your bike
« on: May 01, 2013, 09:27:25 AM »

This has been a rough riding season for me.  I have been riding 11 years and during that time I have only dropped my bike once.  It was during a slow u-turn in a parking lot and I lost focus.

This year I have dropped my bike twice!  On the first ride of the season I kicked the kickstand down and did not check it.  Got off the bike and it went over.  The second time I was trying to put it on the EZ-Up center stand and lost my balance.  I can say that I really love crash bars.

In France we've got a saying:
" there is 2 types of biker: The one who has already fall down, and the one who will..."  :-\
I have done it twice with my Ultra, one on each side when the bike was stopped or nearly, so no injury for me or the bike.

Dropped my '89 Electra Glide twice.  Once loading on a trailer (for service work) and once in the infield of a Roads of Atlanta motorcycle race.  Was VERY embarrased at the race as had lots of folks "help" me pick it up.  That was over 22 years ago and still have cycle buddies that remind me of that one.... ::)
Have been very lucky since....so far, anyway

I suppose the numbers are going to be less representative of our actual practices...

When I get asked how many times, I have to ask how far back do you want to go?

Easily 8 times in the past 30 years...  probably more if you include a couple of off-the-road accidents.   8)

Last time the bike hit hard parts was in a parking lot, I had to stop fast when turning into a parking spot - faster than I could get my feet down - when a car decided they needed the spot more than me, yup cut me right off they did - no eye contact, nothing. Heck they even got out of the car and walked by me standing next to the downed bike like I wasn't even there. I was to angry about dropping my bike to even confront them, which is probably a good thing. I was able to right the bike and was pleased to discover nothing was damaged.

 I hate parking lots.....

Have only dropped my first bike which was a 1500 Intruder. The 2009 is my third Harley, have not had a mishap with any of them, so far.

This is kinda a trick question for me.  I raced motor cross and hair scrambles for over 20 years.  So I am in the lost count category have had a kick/jiffy stand also break twice on another brand of bike and my last bike sat on hot black top and sank in and when I came out of the store it was laying on its side.   Dropped one in the grass at easy riders rodeo in front of everyone in the campgrounds talk about embarrassing it must have been the slowest drop in history even split my pants out trying to save it.

I would drop a bike 4 times a week on a regular basis, usually in front total strangers too. And after demonstrating to them how NOT to get pinned under a bike should it fall over, I would show them the best ways to pick it up. Then I would ask them if they would like to try it and learn the correct way as well.

It's all part of the learning process to become a better rider.

I've dropped a bike twice (not counting dirt bikes).  Once I pulled into a gas station, right up to the pump, put my foot down in oil and over she went.  Now I pay attention to what is on the ground.  The second time was about 6 months ago.  Was riding with a group in the mountains and the guy in front of me said he had been riding over 30 years but the last time was in the 80s!  :confused5:  As we went around a tight curve, he swung wide, over corrected, crossed the lane directly in front of me and disappeared over the side of the mountain.  I stopped on the uphill side of a steep right curve and looked over,  couldn't even see him.  In the excitement, I just layed the bike over and started down the hill.  He was lying about 50 ft down with the bike on his left leg.  Scared me to death.  I remember thinking that he was dead.  other than a burn on his left calf and some bruises, he was fine.

Dennis, I myself wouldn't even count that one... what you did was an emergency egress in the aide of a fallen rider.  When seconds count... you don't have the time to worry about putting down your kickstand, you dismount as safely as possible and do what you have to do.   8)

Was riding just about a hr ago in a funeral and the man in front of me on a fat boy dropped his bike when we stopped.  He said he forgot to put his feet down.  Then he broke his left mirror off picking it up just enough to drop the bike on its other side.  I was laughing so hard I had to put my kick stand down and help him.  I can believe I just posted on this last night and this happened today.  I know he had to have been embarrassed he had to put his mirror in his saddle bag.  If my phone wasn't in the tour pack I would have had this on video.

I have dropped many dirt bikes back in my racing years but not once have I dropped my CVO and she is 8 years old. I almost did one time but I pulled a bicep muscle instead of letting it drop on the chrome or paint.
