I haven't, and have no intention of doing so.  The same concept has been discussed many times here, under different brand names, but it's essentially a thin stainless mesh filter that you have to remove and manually clean.  The other guys come right out and claim increased horsepower and brighter, whiter teeth, just like most other products offered to the Harley market.  The way an oil filter can supposedly increase power is by reducing the amount of power lost pumping the oil through a more restrictive filter.  What they don't say is that the reason there is less restriction is that it doesn't filter as well.  Using this logic, the best performance would come from eliminating the filter element completely.

Harley used to sell a better solution for those who just wanted a fancy cannister, I think it was called Definitive 5 or something similar.  It came with a more conventional and disposable element that at least maintained the full filtration capabilities of the stock setup.  It was so popular (sarcasm) that it disappeared from the catalog after only a couple years.

The standard style spin on filters do a good job; IMHO this is another of those times when someone is trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist, just to mine the Harley owner's pockets for more profits.

Besides what Jerry says - isn't it messy enough trying to just change the filter without dumping oil all over?

I use a K&P similar to the one asked by the OP. I would run one these over a HD filter for the best filtration you can get. HD 5 micron oil filters are a nominal rating, which means 50% or less of the time it will filter a particle that small. They wont post the absolute rating of the HD filters. The filter in question has a 35 micron absolute rating means 98% time it will filter the oil consistently.

Additionally if the oil is cold and too thick to pass through the HD filter the bypass flap opens and the unfiltered cold thick oil will pass so the filter does not create a blockage. With the type of media used in the filter asked about, the oil is always filtered unless you have a major engine failure.

Also with the this type of filter having a magnet on the end of it, you can get a visual of the ferrous metals that are wearing inside your engine.  Clean the filter media from the inside with Gum cutter or Brake clean allow it to dry and re install.

IF you want to use a throw away filter, than use a Amsoil filter. It has a absolute rating of 20 micron at 98.7% of the time >> http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/filters-and-by-pass-systems/motorcycle/amsoil-eaom-chrome-motorcycle-oil-filters/?code=EaOM134C-EA

I'm trying out a K&P just for the simple reason that I want to check my filters and I'm too lazy to cut the disposable ones and lay out the pleats.

I also worked in aviation for a long time and never saw a disposable filter.  They all use stainless mesh filters.  I have no worries running one on my bike.

I have used one similar before worked for a race bike.  We were checking it for debris mainly.  I don't  mind going through the motor I would est. 800 miles to may be 2000 miles tops.  I spend we'll over a 1/2 hr cleaning each time.  Remember this is a race bike it is a Suzuki gsxr.   But it was run hard all the time.  That's why we used it.  Would never think about it on my street bike.  Don't see any benefit at all.  They do use them in NASCAR, formula 1 why their engines don't really last long either.  They should think about that before posting that on their advertising if you thought about each time they race in NASCAR they get a brand new engine with a freshly cleaned filter. Not very restrictive and they got 1 more horse power cut the engine life by a certain percent.  You try to build a engine to make the most power for a certain amount of time.  Include practice, qualifying, then a 500 mile race with a few green white checker starts.  Add in an few extra miles for insurance.  Then you take it all apart weather it needs it or not.

I guess some one might try one if they wanted to change the oil and clean the filter after every ride or daily.  They cost effectiveness is not there then.  I don't  think for street bike and a dyno would even show a improvement.  And if you are changing oil at 5000 miles its not hard not cut open a stock filter and inspect.   If you like the looks I am sure some one sells a cover.

I've been running the K&P filter for the last five years and it looks and works just fine.  Yes you have to clean it, but I like to inspect what runs through it and it really doesn't take much more time.  I also use the Scavenger oil flush kit for the same reason.  More HP?  I think that is BS, but I like the looks, it is chrome and the grooves match the chrome regulator perfectly!

We locked onto K&N oil filters here some years back.

I have one here that we took off. It was creating issues with lifter rattle on start up.. and at full temp. K&N filters get the job done!

Could you elaborate on how this is possible

Anybody that it worried about the effectiveness of a stainless mesh filter on your bike, think about this.  The next time that you take a flight you will be riding in an aircraft that is designed to fly hundreds of thousands of hours 30,000 feet in the sky and uses nothing but stainless mesh filters.  And oh yeah, we didn't have to break down and rebuild after each flight as was suggested for a race bike.

I can also show instances where standard filters had paper breakdown and the pulp lodged in oil passages.  Point being, use a good filter whether it be an Amsoil, K&N, OR a good stainless mesh filter from K&P or PC.

I've been using one for over a year and if all the advertising hype is even close it's a better filtering system.  Mines diamond cut and with the fins it is also somewhat of a cooler.  I like the idea of looking a what's been filtered out of my engine.

I posted that we used one similar on a race bike that we would go through or rebuild regularly.  It also didn't restrict very well which was to give us another horsepower or two.  The web site won't pull up right now but I believe it was a lot more micron filter than a normal filter to give you less restriction.  If I read some thing wrong then I guess it wound be by mistake.  Sme things that claim to give you extra horse power are not always the best thing for every one.
