Hi there

Before I go and use the standard tar and bug remover cream I use on my car, I was wondering if anyone here has a product or can suggest one that will remove small tar spots on the grey finish of the crankcase on the 110 engine?  I've noticed some tar spots on the flat part of the engine directly behind the rear cylinder.

I don't want to use something that may be detrimental to the finish.

And second question: anyone used the genuine HD engine brightener on this engine? I know it works great on black wrinkle finish but will it work on the grey finish?

Try WD-40...it works real well on removing tar.

Spritz a little WD-40 on a paper towel or rag, apply to the tar or whatever it is and let it sit a few seconds, then wipe it off.  That's the way I remove the road gunk (asphalt, tar, etc.) that gets thrown up by the tires on the bike and the cars.

WD-40 did the trick on the small spots of tar on the crankcase but somehow I've got a couple of spots about the size of a half match head on the left side of the rear cylinder head and baked on no doubt!

Tried a small pool of WD-40 on the spots and left it for a few minutes but did not move it.

Tried Shellite (a more volatile form of methylated spirits which evaporates away quickly) and it didn't do anything either.

Any other ideas?

BE VERY CAREFUL with the Bar Keepers Friend or you will have bare alum showing. Good product, just watch it very close as you  rub. I would go to Goop, the one for Plastic, it is pretty mild but will take chewing gum, tar etc off shoes without etching them.

Are you sure that the WD40 won't work. It may just be removing a bit of the surface layer at a time. Try it several times on the same spot.  Please report back.
