Sportster Windshield Help
« on: May 13, 2013, 03:23:45 PM »

I bought the wife a 2013 XL883L Superlow to learn to ride on over the weekend.  She has never been on a bike but wants to learn and ride a few poker runs and short rides.  I rode it from the dealer to the house, around 45 miles, in the wind.  I am certain that she will want a windshield ASAP....I did!  And after riding an Ultra for the last 8 years the sportster seemed TINY!!!

Anyway, she is about 5' 4" or so tall, any suggestions on size and even brand.  I did some looking and there are lots of models out there.....

Thanks!

If you are not going with the MoCo, there are many alternatives. I have ran them all and like the Freedom Shield best, one with a flip at the top works best for me. Get her to sit in a normal riding position and measure to a point at about her top lip. This will prevent her from having to look through the shield. Some people like to look through, so its really a matter of personal pref.

Had a Memphis Shades smoke tint shield on my wife's sporty.  Only drawback was that it wasn't quick detach but so what, we never took it off.  Just so you know, both my wife and daughter thought the 883 was too big for a first bike and never got comfortable with it. We sold it after they stopped riding it completely. I hope your wife takes to it quickly.

Hugh,  I worry too, but she is a stubborn one...she started looking at Fat Boys, but I had her try a few sportys and she really likes the feel of the 883.  If she quits I will build myself a bobber..

Thanks for the info guys!

Bill, my wife (Vickie) has the 2011 Superlow with the short HD detachable windshield.  She's 5'2".  I'm 5'6 and it's a bit short for me and I have it raised as far as I can.  However, she LOVES it and did not want a windshield at first.  I'll post a picture of the shield.

I know this is a windshield post but I also installed some forward pegs so she can have another rest for her legs on longer trips.  Got any questions, PM me.

Here's a pic of the shield installed.

Here's pics of the highway pegs and mount.  They mount really well and the mounting bracket has three settings for comfort.

Memphis shades makes some very good windshields. Various heights, styles and tints. I had a quick detachable on my wide glide and really liked it for long trips. I was able to remove within minutes for the bar hop, you really don't notice the mount clamps and its adjustable to some degree. Check Dennis Kirk, J&P Cycles or your local Harley dealers for the windshields. You always see them at the bigger rallies if there are any going on in your area and they install for free. 2Ksoftail has good instructions for measuring. Most safety and riders classes will recommend looking over the windshield and not thru it.   Good luck with the search.
