Anyone Bothered to Just Leave Things Stock?
« on: May 17, 2013, 04:15:27 PM »

I've been riding around with the stock exhaust system on my 2013 CVO Ultra and compared to my RK that is running a set of Rinehart True Duals....it's refreshingly quieter. I have a ceramic coated cat-free headpipe ready to go on at the 1000 mile checkup and a set of 4" Rinehart cans but...I'm thinking I may not put the Rineharts on and leave the stock mufflers to do their thing. The sound is actually not bad. Is there anyone out there that is running their stock mufflers with a changed-out headpipe? what do you think Riders? The stock mufflers are a high flow muffler are they not?

Thanks for your thoughts,

Soot

p.s. sorry to beat the exhaust question to death.... :beatdeadhorse:

I ran the stock mufflers for about a thousand miles with the Power Duals.  The sound was not bad at all, I just wanted a deeper sound out of mine so I bought a used set of monster ovals off of Ebay.  I was lucky I got them cheap and they were low miles and looked new.  The sound is deeper but not obnoxious.  I kept the stock mufflers because I like the looks of them and have considered getting some Fulsac cores for them just to change it up occasionally

I am having the same thoughts on my new SEUC. The stock mufflers don't sound bad to me, I can hear the restriction that I assume is coming from the catalytic converter that a new set of head pipes would take care of. I just don't want a lot of noise. Had 1.75" Fullsac cores in my 07 with dual pipes, the sound was good but was getting loud, probably needed new packing. It would wear on me some on long trips though so I am leaning toward less volume, even at the expense of a couple HP. Been wondering about the SmartPartz baffles - http://www.smartpartz.com/index.html Anybody had any experience with these?

Running a replacement head pipe with stock mufflers works just fine. Can you get better performance with aftermarket mufflers..... YES but with it comes more noise. So it all comes down to what you are willing to put up with and is more power necessary for YOU. I have had the modified head pipe with stock mufflers on mine for about 2 years now and am happy with the results. Is it for everyone, no, but it's good enough for me. I know there is power left I'm not getting but 46 - 50 mpg, nice tone with good power is all I need for now.

Anyone Bothered to Just Leave Things Stock?

Howie did.  For a long long time he debated keeping his bike stock.  Though he did finally cave in and change just a little bit...

Now that's what I'm talking about Steve. Just having that low, clean rumble without fracturing the inner ear on long trips. Like I said earlier, for around town....I have my 05 RK Custom with Rinehart True Duelies that more than adequately satisfy my need for Thunder!!   :2vrolijk_21:

Howie came to mind when I saw this thread also Don. As the changes started so did FTD and FTW.  :huepfenlol2:

We couldn't help but think of that, could we :huepfenlol2: ?

I still think that thread where Howie started out trying to convince himself he could/would leave a bike stock hold the record and is the poster child for being the most bipolar thread on any chat site anywhere at anytime.  I hope so, but to this day I honestly don't know if Cybil ever got running and completely back together again.

I have a stock 2012 FLHTCUSE7, if I just change the headpipe to a Fullsac X Pipe, and leave on the stock mufflers, will my bike run ok without a TTS tuner ? Can anyone let me know if they did this and how does youre bike perform now vs stock ? Thanks !!

I've been run the x-pipe with stock mufflers on my CVO Ultra and I really do love the much quieter rumble. The 2011 and newer CVO touring mufflers have cores that are tightly wrapped with fiberglass packing leaving no air space around the core. While the 2009-10 CVO touring mufflers have a different and quieter core but the packing around the core leaves room for air movement. I recall a recent thread that suggested the newer tightly wrapped CVO cores may rob the bike of some torque.

I replaced my 2012 cores last week with 2.0 Fullsac cores and screens.  The right side can insulation was bunched up in the back third of the can exposing the front two-thirds with no insulation at all.  This is after 9000 miles, so I don't think tightly wrapped is accurate for bone stock. Even the bone stock will sound different with the insulation essentially missing on most of the baffle.  The 2.0 cores sound great, nice low rumble, not really any louder than stock when cruising but love the more bassy rumble.  I am hoping the screens will hold the insulation in place with these new cores.

johnbv, I am far from an expert on this, I ride a FLHTCUSE8 I can only tell you my experience.  I had Power Duals installed on my bike when I got it and ran the stock muffler for awhile.  I was advised to put a tuner in when I went with the Power Duals because when the cats are removed the bike will breathe so much better.  It really changed the sound too, for the better IMHO

The ECM on the bike can adapt to minor changes like installing slip on mufflers.  Removing the CAT by installing the Fullsac header has dramatically altered the flow of air through the engine, and IMO, the ECM cannot adapt to that kind of change satisfactorily.  Even with the stock mufflers.  The bike runs lean from the factory.  It is even leaner now.  I would install a tuner, and the TTS is a good choice.  Not only will you benefit from the additional fuel introduced to the mix, but the overall driveability of the bike will also improve.
