Thremal Switch's for cooling fans.
« on: May 24, 2013, 07:52:40 AM »

While cutting hay last night the mind was wandering. I have the Ward werks fans and Big sky fans that i have yet to install on my Ultra. The Ward Werks fans have the thermal switch that cut them on. I was going to install the oil cooler fans on the ACC switch. I am not a electrican by any means just doesn't click for me. I can handle the basic electric stuff. Just wondering if anyone has wired any brand oil cooler fans and head cooling fans on the same thermal switch?

I have the WPW fans on my Convertible, very easy install, takes at most half an hour including the thermal switch!
You are much better going the the Thermall switch rather than the ACC!
The Thermal switch is just 2 wires that are installed in the Positive or negative power lines coming from the Fans! literally a plug and play install and cant really get it wrong!
The switch itself is just pushed between the 1st and 2nd fins (using a wooden dowel of some sort! if you look on the WPW web site there is a install guild that is very easy to follow,
It really is very simple and nothing to worry about,

Another shot of the WPW Fans on my Bike!
As you can see, i also fitted the Performance Machine Horn cover, imo looks more balanced withe the Fans than the Cowbell!

The best approach is to set up automatic operation and forget about the manual switching of the fans with the ACC switch.  And you will want a separate thermostatic control for the oil cooler as opposed to trying to use just one controller for both the head temps and the oil temps.  Those items run at significantly different temperatures, and depending on how the circuit is set up if the current for both sets of fans runs through one controller it may overload and destroy it.  You could use one controller to trigger relays for each set of fans, to keep the heavier current isolated from the controller, but then you still have the situation with different temperature trigger points for the two different systems.

Same on mine!
I use a WPW Thermostat on the Oil Cooler and the WPW Thermal switch on the Fans, the Fans being hard wired to the Battery,

Jerry the relay is kinda the thought i was having, but didnt think about the difference in trigger temps, on the head it would be higher than the oil temp. I might be over killing this, but i also have the replacement oil thermostat from Jason for the oil cooler. I have a good tune, good pipe, but i also have 117ci. So traffic triggers the one cyl mode right often.
thanks for the replies guys. hopefully i can get it all installed monday.
