Bad shake at idle.
« on: May 26, 2013, 07:36:43 AM »

I have 04 FLHTCSE with 50,000 miles upgraded cam tensioner changed in bike. It started acting up3000 miles after done. No oil pressure at idle. Repair shop found bad o ring on oil pump. They fixed it. They Dynoed bike and tuned it up. Road it 500 miles while riding. went to start had rattle in bottom end. NO oil pressure for 3 second. Bike low on oil 1.5 quarts. topped oil off. No problems with low oil pressure. Now  bike shakes bad at idle. Re dynoed same power and torque. Motor shakes bad at idle. Calms down at higher RPM. Any recommendations on problem. Shop acts like nothing wrong with bike. Are lifters out. bearings going out. I feel shop knows oil pump issue he installed incorrectly. Has done damage and don't what to admit to it.

If no lost of power, and no (new) noise coming from motor check your motor mounts... could be them causing the problem. :nixweiss:

You may have things out of alignment causing the vibration.

I don't have the procedure to do this but if you have your shop manual or you do a search in the forum I am sure you can find it.  But there is a procedure to aligning drive line with engine mounts.  If one small step is not done properly or accidentally skipped or not torqued properly well you get the shaking.

Being the holiday weekend I wish one of the dyno or engine guys would help me with a cut and paste to help,ya.  I have this new apple thing and don't know if I like it any how.

But. First thing is check service manual for motor mount alignment procedure.  Something is just most likely off just a little bit.

Did you install the new motor mount correctly? The concaved side goes up.
Make sure there is nothing contacting the frame or footboard brackets. A heat shield or exhaust hitting can cause bad vibrations.
Did the shop check the crank runout when the cams were done? If so what was it?

Didn't change cams. Done Harley up grade kit with oil pump. New front motor mount.

Did you install adjustable pushrods when you changed out the cam plate and oil pump?  If so, double check the pushrod adjustments.  You may have a cylinder balance issue if the pushrods for one cylinder are maladjusted.

What mount did you use to replace the original mount?  I don't believe you can still buy the old softer rubber mount that came stock on the '05 and earlier bikes, and the urethane mounts Harley went to in '06 - '08 are harder and do seem to transfer more vibration at idle.  Some of the aftermarket urethane mounts do the same thing.

Depending on how much you had to jack up the engine to change out the front mount, you may now have the engine/trans in a slight bind.  The rear mounts, which are basically the swingarm pivot shaft bushings and donuts, can get tweaked and placed in a bind.  You may need to loosen the front mount with the bike sitting perfectly level, run the engine at idle for maybe five to ten seconds, shut it down and re-tighten the mount.  This is called neutralizing the mounts.  It would be best to actually check the powertrain alignment as well, but that requires some tools the regular person is unlikely to have.  Check with a dealership or good independent shop.

I replaced front motor mount.Shake got worse.

Over the years my Dealer has replaced the front motor mount 2-3 times on the '05 SEEG. The bike was in for unrelated reasons and when I picked it up they always told me; "by the way, we changed out your front motor mount" and I would reply; "I didn't know it needed it" then, they would reply; " it is covered under ESP"

Every time the front mount was replaced, the bike would viberate noticeably more at idle for several thousand miles then smooth out, but with the most recent mount (must be the stiffer urethane?) the bike vibrates at idle, but smooths out around 1500 or so.

There is absolutely nothing amiss with my '05 SEEG, I think it is just the harmonics / stiffness of the "new style motor mount".

Every Harley I've owned shakes at idle. I was sitting at a stoplight once with my father-in-law who rides a Wing and he asked me why my hand was shaking so bad and if I was nervous - LOL. Just how bad is yours shaking?

It's possible you need your map adjusted,,   Changing cams will definitely cause a need to make changes. I had to increase my idle after I changed out my front motor mount. I tried a few different ones,, and still was idling poor.   Finally, I was able to get at the map and saw it was set at 970 or something like that.  Thanks to another member on here, I was shown how to increase the idle speed.   No it's very smooth and I finally ended  up with the new hd mount.  All is good now. ,,,,,,,,,,,,   Finally.     Stuart.
