Performance Oil Advice
« on: May 29, 2013, 05:52:17 AM »

Just curious.
In the past I've used SE Synthetic oil in all my bikes.
When we put in this new motor I put in Mobil 1 for V2's.

Now please don't start abusing me. I'm curious as to what people are using in their motors.
I'm asking as my bike tuner suggested using Diesel 15/40 Mineral Oil.  :nixweiss:
He also said a lot of the synthetic oils like Mobil 1 contain a lot of varnishes (I think that's what he said) and other crap.

He uses it in all his race bikes and has had no issues or problems.
His thoughts are if it can look after turbo diesel motors then it can look after V2's.

I'm curious to know from more knowledgeable people than me what they think about this and what they suggest running in a
performance TC motor.  :nixweiss:

I just want to protect my motor  :)

I actually spoke with a Chevron lubrication engineer on friday. We were talking business about the oil run in our 2250hp MTU diesels I have in my fleet. After we were done, I asked him about oil for my bike.  He actually said that he would run a diesel oil as they are some of the most advanced oils out there.  He said the chemical additives in diesel oil usually far surpassed auto oils. In specific, Delo 400 LE seems to be the leading covnventional oil to run. I mentioned that I planned to run Mobile 1 15W-50, and he said that was an excellent oil as well. I'll be sticking to the Mobile one only because of the extra viscosity of the 50 wt.

Mobil 1 here.

I also use it in my truck too.

If you are asking about other oils and lubricants for the bike I use Red Line.

If your next bike happens to have a diesel engine, then by all means run diesel motor oil in the viscosity recommended by the engine manufacturer.

Rather than listen to one guy who may be slightly off kilter, why not read the manual from the folks who designed your Twin Cam engine?  In the meantime, feel free to research the differences between oils formulated for your air cooled Harley and oils formulated for diesel engines.  I think I'd go with what trained engineers recommend, as opposed to some guy with a diesel fetish.   And for what it's worth, the Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50 is an excellent choice and is the correct viscosity for your engine.

Do you use Lucas oil stabilizer as well? when I was in Sturgis and had an oil change that's what a performance shop used and recommended.

I would recommend you contact TransdDiesel and ask for their Agip fyll syn MC oils.
They are the importer to NZ, and have branches spread around your country.

http://transdiesel.com/model/new/90/eni-agip-oils--lubricants/97/motorcycle-engine-oilgear--fork-oil/104/437/racing-4t-5w-4020w-5010w-60-api-sg/
This oil will do anything an engine oil can do.

 Do some research http://www.pqiamerica.com/index.html :book:
Pick your oil run it and than have a oil analysis done by one of the many labs out there.
 example: http://www.polarislabs.com/oil-analysis.php  :deal2:
Or stick with a name brand oil designed for your engine and change it out every 3 to 5000 miles. And enjoy your bike.
There are some very excellent motor oils being made in your part of the world. And unlike here in the US. were the oil companies can tell us the oil is synthetic and still only be a blend. In Europe if it says full synthetic, it is. No false advertising.

Mine is also telling me to run dino oil. He blames the excessive carbon build up on the synthetic- all the 110's he's had apart shows rings that never seal properly,  along with tapered cylinders and hot running engines. Mine at 30,000 miles was the worse he's seen (I'll post pics of them in a new thread). I'm going to give Brad Penn 20W50 motorcyle oil a shot and see what happens.

Everybody should read what GRC says above and drop these overthought oil brand postings. Use whatever you want and life goes on. But I don't ride a diesel and never will, so I will not be buying any diesel rated engine oil. Someone above uses Lucas, I LOVE Mr Lucas, he does more for motorsports sponsorship than anyone person I can ever remember, Drag racing, dirt late models, sprints, Nascar, boats, motorcycles and lawn mower racing all are funded to some extent out of his pocket, not counting Lucas Oil Arena but I will never change to his stuff because Mobil 1 is going to help with my retirement checks so that is my brand and reason for buying it and we all seem to need a reason.

That sounds more like an issue with proper break-in procedure than an oil problem. Most modern oils, dino or synthetic, are more than adequate to keep everything slippery that needs to be, I prefer synthetics because the technology is proven to be superior but it has to be used in the proper application. It is up to us consumers to be wise about the use of our machines and not let our purchasing decisions be made or swayed by some wrench on a soapbox or an ad we see while watching a race or someone who got sucked into a MLM selling some new fangled friction eliminator. Use purpose designed lubricants, change them on a regular schedule then enjoy your ride.
