inner primary seal leak.....and electrical drain
« on: May 30, 2013, 10:21:07 AM »

Hello all

I have an 06 CVO Ultra with two issues

Inner primary leak...trans fluid was down considerably (but not critical) when I last checked and replenished on the weekend. A "friend" indicated to me that there may be a vent for the transmission somewhere...and that vent may be plugged...and that would cause pressure build up and oil to blow past seals. Does this even sound remotely familiar to anyone...and if so, can you tell me where such a vent is located so that I can see if it is blocked up?

2) have replaced stator last summer, have had output checked at regulator (within acceptable range 31-34)....have a 3 year old odessy battery which was diagnosed and seems to be operating fine....yet the gauge will cycle every twenty seconds or so from the high end of the gauge...to below 12 noon....and then engine and electrical lights will come on...until the guage reads high again....this is especially evident in warm weather....any help please!!

There is a candy cane shaped oil hose that comes off the trans top cover, this is the vent line. Shift shaft seals are notorious for leaking, on the left side of the bike look down between the inner primary and trans case where the shift arm goes into the case.

The stator should put out about 20VAC per 1k rpm. The 06 has a three phase stator so you need to check voltage across each phase. If that checks good then it is most likely the voltage regulator. Look for dirty and or corroded connections.

If memory serves me, which is highly suspect, there was a batch of bad chrome regulators that were put on the ''06's.  They would work fine for a while, then start flaking out.  I had one of them and the symptoms you describe looking at the gauge sound very familiar.  Several people here had them replaced under warranty, me being one of them.

I had a recall notice on mine back in 06!

That's right...there was a recall on them, and the chrome versions were on backorder for a short time!  Thanks for jogging my old brain...

as for that candy cane hose off the trans cover....does this have a tendancy of getting blocked up..thereby creating undue pressure in trans?...or is this the seal behind shift arm..or both
