Easier Way to Remove Tranny Plug?
« on: May 31, 2013, 09:16:08 PM »

I have been using a backassward way of removing my tranny plug for a few years now (lets just say it involves vice grips). Is there an easier way to remove the plug- very short allen/hex head wrench, some kind of strange extension, ect.? it is even more difficult with my breakout- in deeper I think. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

Looks like everyone has the same trouble I do when removing the filler plug.  Maybe there is no easy way to do this.

is the procedure any different than it would be on a deuce?  if not, i've always used a hex socket on a 6 inch extension.  loosen it until you can spin it with your fingers, then take the ratchet off, spin the plug the rest of the way out.

oh, guess i should mention that i have the bike on a j&s jack with a oil drain pan directly underneath.

I guess I should be clearer- not the drain plug, but the filler plug that has a hex head or allen head on it.

How about a photo of the location of the plug and surrounding obstructions to clarify the issue.  The older bikes didn't have an access problem unless you installed pipes that wrapped across the filler/dipstick location.  Show everyone why you're having an access problem and perhaps you'll get some replies.

Get a ball tipped allen wrench and you'll be able to get the angle needed to spin it off and on.  The tool kits for some bikes included the correct size wrench for the transmission dipstick/plug.

I currently use an allen head socket head, where I use a hammer to knock out the allen head and then use vice grips to angle in there to unscrew it.  I will take a picture at some point today and put it up- the oil tank and lines are what make it difficult to get to.  It is right under the oil tank.
